Hello jhsd1124013561! Sorry for confusion. It is the same 144 fountain pen on both photos; the photo of the nib was taken a couple of months before the second photo and before it got damaged !? The converter might not belong to the pen, it's just that I found them together (but the FP had a cartridge in it !?!) and assumed they belonged together. 1st gen then, thanks for the confirmation.

Hi there,

Looking at your first photo, it looks like a 1st gen nib with correct black colored section.

However, the second photo shows a burgundy color section and a feed not belong to 1st gen, I got confused there...

I tried to photograph my 146 burgundy beside my LPP Planets and something very peculiar happened. The LPP is very slightly darker and to the eye looks a little more towards a brown hue but when photographed the LPP appears more red! I think it may be due to the high shine of the finish? Who knows.

It's why I haven't put them up here as they would look misleading.

I have only today the whole of this posting plus jhsd’s post on the 12/14 series and had that warm feeling.

My two favourites for balance and smoothness are the 12 and 144.

What wonderful informative articles.

My 2nd generation 144R has an 18K nib. Clip says W-GERMANY and no serial number. Section is burgundy and has brass fitting.

Excellent pen and fits in the pocket of my scrubs perfectly.

The pic in my signature is my 1st generation 144R with the black section and plastic fitting. That nib is 14k.

None of us knows how long he shall live or when his time will come. But soon all that will be left of our brief lives is the pride our children feel when they speak our names.

I have always been an admirer of burgundy.  Actually most colors are nice except for brown...too earthy and proletarian for my taste.

Were any burgundy Montblanc released with silver clip and adornments?

Is it fair for an intelligent and family oriented mammal to be separated from his/her family and spend his/her life starved in a concrete jail?

I have only seen pictures of burgundy and gold, no other colours, though burgundy/platinum does sound like an interesting combination.

It looks to me that the first 53 images of the original post are not appearing due to broken links... 😢

Is anyone else experiencing this?

'Burgundy' and 'bordeaux' are just two different words for the exact same colour, right? I.e., a 144 Burgundy is the equivalent to a 144 Bordeaux.

I experience the same, which is a real pity - this is an excellent post!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
