Quick And Dirty: Pelikan 4001 Green

This is one of my oldest inks, and nothing much remains in the bottle, but it still looks bright. I probably got it because it was one of the few locally available and cheap; I never got along with this colour but there's nothing wrong with it and it doesn't mean others can't appreciate it, to me it looks like a perfect bright green. I'm not sure it's as widely available or cheap these days.

I'm sorry if you can see Mandarin written on the other side but it still gives a good idea of what this ink looks like; it took me three attempts to get the brightness right, and it still might be brighter than on this shot.

First row of other colours: Ama Iro, Kon Peki, Souten, Équinoxe 6, Tsuyu Kusa.

Second row: Ina Ho, Lie de Thé, Yama Guri, Ajisai, Asa Gao.

Third row: Verde muschiato, Vert Empire, Chiku Rin, Inti, Mandarin.

Fourth row: Perle Noire, Rouge hematite, Poppy red, Orange Indien.

Ffith row: Perle Noire japanese EF, Verdigris.

Good comparison as usual but do you have any 4001 Dark Green on hand? The 4001 Green you list here -- which Pelikan actually names "4001 Brilliant Green" -- in fact isn't really all that brilliant a green but IMO and as we see here more of a middle to dark green. Thus the biggest question since the release of their "real" 4001 Dark Green remains: how much darker is the 4001 Dark Green in comparison?

Thanks! I don't have any Dark Green unfortunately; since my bottle is probably at least 15 years old, I would expect it to have evaporated at least a little and be even lighter than what I have, originally. I would definitely call it a medium green and not a light green, like Chiku Rin.

I have both, and am glad I have an extra bottle of Brilliant Green.

The darker green was to me a disappointment, it didn't shade as much. Lacked a bit of pizazz.

I was chasing purples, when a half bottle of 4001 Brilliant Green was on sale at a store....at that price I'd give green a try.......and green  was nothing I was interested in. :headsmack:

Within the year, I bought 14 green or greenish inks. :yikes: Now have 18-19. Never did get back to chasing purple.

In the green-green inks, for shading, R&K Verdura finished tied with MB Irish Green, with 4001 Brilliant Green third by a neck. Colors were close....paper and paper tone can make a difference to which leads.

I've heard conflicting reports that Pelikan has or will not stop making Brilliant Green. If it has then I suggest buying a now over priced bottle off of Ebay.

As far as I can tell 4001 Brilliant Green is, in fact, discontinued and has been out of Pelikans product line for about a year.

Yup, that's true. the 4001 Brilliant Green has been taken out of their program, officially since January 2018, just because it hasn't been selling well enough to hang onto it.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
