This time I got my inspiration during a walk in the park, where swans & ducks are showing off their little ones. The scene below reflects this lovely moment of nature, but the inks were chosen because I like their soft tones, which reflect the softness of the scene. The inks are kyo-iro Soft Snow of Ohara and Stone Road of Gion. They are the only ones I own, but I like them a lot, and plan to lay my paws on the other ones from this inkmaker.

Very interesting choices, namrehsnoom. Not the usual options for Spring in the northern hemisphere, but your delightful scene does have a softness to it.

You made me rethink my combination... ;)

I went with the traditional combinations, after all. There is a row of linden trees down our street here in Indianapolis, and from my window, I can see the fresh leaves —our Spring was very late this year.

The paper is Koh-i-Noor "Paper for Pens". Very smooth, but some usually well-behaved inks have a tendency to feather on it. :(

It had to be something else than flowers; I already did flowers twice this year!! This thing was looking better in my mind than it does on paper... Oh well I guess this is what imagination is for.

Lots of inks; some of them I submitted in earlier combos (sorry)

The paper is a drawing/sketching paper - that seems very absorbent and prone to feathering. Not great but it didn't affect the result too much.

I picked three inks for flowers and grass:

The "drawing" is of course, not botanically accurate...

Thanks, LG! Waka Uguisu sample added to my wishlist! :D

I also found this months brief quite a difficult one, especially because everyone else is a better artist than I am.

So I went out into my garden and picked the best flowering shrub that I currently have in flower for May. Pieris:

Thank you :-)

Believe it or not, in reality the actual colours of the sunset were much more vivid than the inks I used. But if I’d tried to sketch the colours true-to-life it would have looked ridiculously fake!

I think I've seen this plant before, but I didn't know what it was called. A great choice of colours! Meadow is one of my favourite greens.

  • 3 weeks later...

I'm surprised that May's theme seems less popular than the others so far. I had trouble picking inks because there were so many to choose from.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
