So, I just got a cheapo UV light to do a little bit of fluorescence testing, and I found a few interesting things. Unfortunately, i could not actually get a good photo of most of them. Also my eyes kind of hurt now.

 

Here's the ones that I got a good picture of:

Noodler's Walnut, pretty striking effect in person

 

Vinta Makopa, also fairly dramatic:

 

Vinta Bodabil, a bit more subtle, but comes through on the camera better than some less subtle colors:

 

Robert Oster Bronze, I'm actually not totally convinced that this is not just the affect of looking at the ink under mostly violet light rather than actually fluorescence:

Vinta Leyte - Only where I've used water, interestingly

Noodler's Zhivago - Not actually sure about this one. Even if it is the case, the black component sort of blocks it, so you can only see it where the green has been separated out (usually by a waterbrush)

R&K Alt-Goldgrün - This one I also think might not be fluorescence, but just the effects of viewing it under mostly violet light

The latter three are all in the same sort of color family along with stuff like Sailor Ink Studio 123, but interestingly, the 123 is much less obvious if it is in fact there (I'll have to try to find a writing sample of 162, or whatever it was, as that one is probably closer to the above, being teal-dominant rather than magenta-dominant).

 

Really makes me tempted to buy a better blacklight (one that specifically emits 365nm light instead of 395).

 

EDIT: Oh yeah, I also found out that Rhodia (or some Rhodia anyway) and Clairfontaine Triomphe papers appear to use optical brightening agents, which isn't exactly surprising

Got two more! These were both done with a dip pen (I think), so heavier with ink than usual.

 

While you can't really tell here, in person there was basically a white halo around the lines. Very cool!

 

This one is mostly only noticeable where the ink smeared. Interesting (or should I say Inkteresting).

It is so hard to capture the cool florescence of the ink or the pens.

Well, a very kind forum member gave me a 365nm UV light, so I've tried to get some better photos of things.

 

First off, Vinta seems to love flourescent dyes. Some of these I have already mentioned, but wasn't able to get great photos of.

 

Vinta Bodabil. A lot of these need to be diluted or smeared a bit to see the glow.

 

Vinta Sandugo. Note that a somewhat similar ink, Krishna Mumbai, doesn't seem to be flourescent at all (though that's a bit closer to Pamana, which I don't think I noticed a flourescent effect from.

 

Vinta Sirena. A bright yellow flourescence. Neat!

 

Vinta Leyte. Also bright yellow.

 

Vinta Armada

 

I think this was Colorverse Black Hole, but could have been one of their other blacks (I have several samples). The glow is pretty much the same color as the original color, but it's clearly glowing

Private Reserve DC Supershow Blue was a huge surprise because it looks like it's nothing but blue dye(s) in normal light:

 

Okay, here were some of the ones that I was really unsure about before. I'm still unsure about them, but they really do look very different under a blacklight even though they don't seem to be actually giving off light:

 

Pennonia Zuzmó, probably the most dramatic effect:

 

 

Rohrer & Klingner Alt-Goldgrün (blacklight makes it look more like how Bronze looks in normal light)

Noodler's Habanero, you can't really see it in the photo, but I think it's giving off a tiny bit of light in some of the more orange spots. A very mild effect at best, though.

 

Some pens:

 

This is a completely empty Nib Creaper, the clear resin of the ink window (which looks slightly stained yellow in normal light) is pretty clearly glowing. Is it the resin or is there an optical brightening agent in the mix?

 

PenBBS 309. This one was quite a surprise. Just happened to be out on the table when I was photographing things

 

Through the ink window, and the converter of the Jinhao Shark, you can see the Noodler's Blue Ghost glowing. Pretty cool looking

Noodler's Akhmatova, very faint, kind of salmon colored, I guess? Surprisingly I haven't been able to detect any flourescence in the Chekhov even though I think the Russian Series are marketed as flourescent. There's actually a small chance of contamination being the cause of what little we see here (because I was using the same water and brushes for all three of these images), but I think I saw a slight response when using the 395nm light on Akhmatova much earlier on a different drawing. I should probably double check this at some point.

 

Vinta Makopa. Really bright hot pink.

Any one used these Chinese inks from Aliexpress in their fountain pens?   The colors are good in regular light and under UV.

Been playing with trying to create my own UV inks.   Not perfect yet but it’s a start.   Both the Scribal and mine are invisible in regular light.

Both are visible in regular light, the Thorntons is more so.   Mines better for invisibility.
