Frankenpen? Montblanc X Pelikan?

Call me crazy..

is it possible to swap a Montblanc nib onto a Pelikan nib unit? did some research without any findings.

Looking at the Pelikan M1000, the nib looks awfully disproportionate while the Montblanc 149 nib looks asthetically more pleasant. My question is.. has anyone tried to swapping a 149 nib in a M1000? or a 146 nib in a M800?

I know it's a sacrilege to do/ask that ):

These nibs and nib units are pretty expensive. I can understand that there might be reluctance to swap the nibs, given the cost. Once you mess with the Pelikan nib unit, it will be somehow not the same, with a probable reduction in value. The 149 nib won't be cheap to acquire, and would you want to take the nib out of your own 149 for this swap? You would have to buy a 149 nib. Nevertheless, it is quite believable that some inventive soul here would try it.

No, you cant install a Montblanc 149 nib on to a Pelikan m1000 pen, and vice versa. Plus, it is a really unfeasible idea, that will cost a lot of money, because, Pelikan nib units for the M1000 pens are expensive, as are the Montblanc 149 nibs. And trying to install the nibs into the other company's pens, good luck to you. Because, even really well known nibmeisters wont try it. Trust me, I have discussed the possibility with a few during the Ohio Pen Show.

Yeah probably because of the nib curvature difference between the 2 nibs.

A 149 nib wouldn't fit a Pelikan M800, but a 146 would, dimension wise.

The opening of the inner cap measures 10mm but it narrows down to about 9.43mm and that's about as far as my caliper can go. The 149 nib shoulder width measures up to 10mm.

I am pretty confident it is possible, with a custom feed dimensioned properly attached to a Pelikan thread compatible collar.

Now it's a question of 'is it really worth it' that doesn't make people want to try it I guess :P

No, it still wont fit. The Pelikan nib units come as a while unit, i.e. the nib, the feed, is housed in a threaded piece which needs a threaded section into which it screws in. So, unless you are willing to pay someone with made machining skills who will do a bespoke job of manufacturing a special section that will accept a Pelikan nib unit, your plan wont work. And the cost of machining a section for the MB 149 pen that will accept a Pelikan nib unit must be astronomical.

Indeed, from http://flexiblenib.com/store/custom-feed-fees/ and I quote the 5th

  1. Vintage music nib fit to Pelikan M800, black ebonite: Measurement fee $25.00 + Design fee $75.00 + Cost of feed $30.00 + Cost of collar $5.00 = $135.00

Getting a MB146 nib would be 150$ for a total of near 300$... and I guess that's literally the price of an entire used Pelikan M800

All this because Pelikan designs ugly nib shapes from M600 up :gaah:

People have disassembled Pelikan nib units and changed nibs. Doing this on a MB 149 to Pelikan 1000 is more costly. You mean the nib and feed from one won't fit into the other physically? The cost aside, not possible in any nib-feed combination. It seems foolish, but the heart wants what it wants.

From what I see, 149 nibs are very tall, and much of the length is hidden inside the collar, so it would be very hard to fit it inside a m1000 barrel. I don't think this is possible to do, or at least would require a massive modification to the barrel. Tbh, I think you can grow onto the Pelikan nibs, as they're pretty much loved in the community, and m1000 is one of the only few semi-flex nibs left in modern pens. Or you can find if anyone does bindes to the 149 body, that would make it look like a Pelikan

@Ruaidhri This was an absolutely wonderful bit of writing, and I hope that you're able to maintain the style once all of the medications are out of your system.  Take care and recover quickly!

These comments make me sad as I sympathise with Ruaidhri, having great difficulties in being taken seriously. Or being taken at all (no off-colors jokes, please!) In spite of overwhelming odds,  Ruaidhri -now I know how to spell it- made a courageous decision and stuck to it. I was diagnosed with a similar growth in a place I will not reveal. Oh, well, if you insist it was Mount Sinai Hospital. But I firmly intend to walk in Ruaidhri's footsteps, if he will let me, on my next visit to Dublin.
