I mostly agree with these, although not always 100%. For example, as much as I like the idea of a list it should be subject to change. Both additions and subtractions. Say you have a pen on your list, but get an opportunity to try it out and after doing so determine that it isn't the right pen for you. Too heavy, too light, too big, too small. Or something else entirely. Take it off your list. It shouldn't be set in stone like the 10 Commandments. Likes and dislikes change.

 

Totally agree.

Likes, dislikes, and preferences do change, so the list has to be dynamic.

Pens should go on and off the list as required.

Excellent list! I agree it should be a sticky post.

 

In the same vein as 6 & 8 I would add that you don't have to spend a lot of money to enjoy this hobby. Over twelve years I haven't spent much more than $1,000 on all my pens and inks.

No.7 can certainly save you money, but beware if you criticize the emperor's clothes. FPN acolytes can be brutal to skeptics.

The only thing I would add (apologize if you said this) is to remember that there are three elements to a good writing experience: pen, paper, and ink. Experiment with new inks and papers just as much as pens!

I would add -- it's a pen -- it writes! Spend more time writing and less time obsessing which pen,ink, paper, etc. to buy next. Whatever you have may not be the "best" but use it to write daily. Spend less time on the tools and more time on doing the job. This hobby can be similar to photography -- spend less time and money on cameras and more time taking photographs.

My crude summary would be: Do as you please and enjoy your pens the way you like best.

I would add to the original post that the world of fountain and dip pens has many aspects to it. Find what makes you happiest and do it your way. Your interests may change over time. For me, I started out over 60 years ago using a fountain pen for my writing. Fifteen years ago, I became an active collector and user. Six years ago, I moved from a collecting focus to just using and enjoying the remaining pens in my collection.
