I tried an experiment and it turned out very well. I love the color of Noodler's Habanero and Oster Ng Special, but they can be difficult inks. But together? :D Well-behaved shade monster!

LOVELY!!!! Your mix reminds me of one of my favorites, Kin-mokusei.

All of the posts in this thread are fabulous. That KWZ Pink-brown is a must have. Gorgeous!

Your comment got me to wondering how Kin-mokusei and Spicy Special stack up. Here's the visual:

K-m is brilliant, with that wonderful silver sheen, and SS is more like a hot pepper, or autumn leaves?

That's a great mix HJB. I like mixing yellow/orange inks together too. :)

Love the mix and SBRE Brown (...and always Kin-mokusei)!
Is Dr. Brown's available anywhere right now? I'd love to get my hands on some. Errrr, my pens on some.

OOOH. Earl Grey looks quite nice!

Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

I think I have only seen Earl Grey a couple of times live. And it seems intriguing to me. Grey (gray?) inks otherwise haven't really appealed to me. But this one, I think I will get a sample of.

Nice sharers, Runnin Ute!

Thanks, Liz! I don't have it in a pen right now, but you should see my vintage Sheaffer Skrip Emerald Green! Diamine Saddle Brown is a nice shader too.

"The Vannesses should have it on your side of the pond..."

Thank you very much for this tip, Nohivo!

I just checked their site, and they are currently out of stock. Maybe they will get more???

It's a beautiful brown, imho.

Some of my favourite shading inks, on Elias 90gsm paper (from Everything Calligraphy)

Beautiful! I like Elias paper, though I sometimes find it a bit too 'powdery'. Also, it makes inks with 'chameleon' characteristics look especially different (such as Diamine Salamander, Sailor Jentle Rikyu-Cha, etc).

Love the comparison! Spicy Special looks more earthy and organic.

I recently reviewed SBRE Brown ink, and believe it's currently available from Akkerman's. I presume that's where Vaness buys it from.

If you can't get it please PM me.

Thank you - I have lots of shading inks but I find that particular combination of four especially pleasing.

Yes, I agree about Elias paper. It does have an idiosyncratic character, but I enjoy that as I like to have variety in my FP-friendly papers. Colorverse Vortex Motion ink is amazing on it - its chameleon nature is really emphasised.

I must have been asleep at the wheel —I missed the discussion of "chameleon" characteristics of inks. Do I presume correctly that they are inks that change color depending on paper and/or pen?

I wonder if I have any of these in my collection...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
