Ink In My Section!

ArdentlyAuthentic

Recommended Posts

Hi! I'm new to the fountain pen community, and am so excited to be here!

I recently bought a Monteverde Monza demonstrater pen and I've noticed that there is a lot of ink in the barrel. I've taken the pen apart and I can't figure how to get the ink out. It is really frustrating me as it both ruins the pen's aesthetic and makes me wonder whether there is a flaw in the pen.

Could anyone let me know how I can fix this?

Unless the Monza has double wall section (like a TWSBI 580, where the section has an inner and outer piece) that looks perfectly normal to my eye. Especially for a demonstrator.

So its ok the section is completely purple, and there is no way to fix it? (It used to be clear)

There's nothing to fix. This is a clear section that allows you to see the nib and feed/collector through the section. When you fill the pen, this area is dipped into the ink, and the collectors hold the extra ink. They're designed to hold any extra ink so that the pen doesn't flood. As you write it will be draw from the collector to the tip of the pen. The amount of ink that is there will diminish, and then fill again. The pen is working as it should. The same thing happens with other pens, you just can't see it because the sections are opaque.

Thank you so much! I was really worried about it, but I completely understand now.

There's nothing to be fixed. The feed, therefore the ink, runs through the section. It's clear when empty or filled with an invisible, UV reactive ink. Otherwise, it'll be the color of whatever ink you happen to be feeding your pen because you're seeing the ink itself through clear plastic.

Quick on the draw as always Ron. Beat me to it while I was typing.

As others have mentioned, there is nothing to fix, but i suspect your section is two parts, with a separation where ink gets wicked into it. Hense the coloring even when the feed and nib are pulled out. This ink will just sit there. That "compartment" doesn't communicate with the feed/main ink lines, and will not be used in writing. If it bothers you, you can always use an ultrasonic cleaner to get it out, but with the next fill, it'll pick ink up again.

Ive seen this too in a couple of Monza that I have. It does indeed appear to have an inner sleeve in the section. So without an ultrasonic cleaner can the inner sleeve be removed (kinda like the nib and feed can) for cleaning? Just curious. Thanks.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
