Week #51 / 17 Dec: Thanks For The Memory - 2017 Weekly Ink Project

Many thanks to milo984 for this week's theme: Pick an ink that reminds you of your favourite music, book, film or character.

As usual, don't forget to share with us your choice of ink, your writing, drawing, doodling or anything with the ink in this thread. You can take a photo, make a scan, or even better, write letters and CRV reviews (what is a CRV?) and mail them to the many ink pals here. You are welcome to check back on this thread even when we've gone past this week.

Click here to read more about this community project. Links to the two previous links can be found there too.

The last week: Happy Holidays!

Thank you for your feedbacks from last week regarding next year's inky project! Those of you who responded are all quite favourable to the idea of a monthly theme of matching two (or more) inks. Now if we are going with that, I need your ideas on what themes of combos there can be.
I'm quite fond of the theme of complementary colours. I can also think of themes about doppelgängers (look-alike inks), dark and light contrasts, warm and cold colours, inks with similar names, inks of the same brand, inks that you think look nice together, etc. What do you think? We need more ideas.

I was actually prepared for this one!

Though thinking about it, maybe my favourite book is Perelandra. Or Pilgrim's Progress. Or Snowcrash. Nope, can't decide!

Seasonal themes? Geographic themes (e.g. Antarctica, or the Sahara...)?

I like the idea of fairly vague themes so there's some flexibility in what colors/shades you use (don't want to buy more samples - I have too many already!). It occurs to me we could re-use some of this year's themes.

I work better when I know how far I have to go, so here are the themes listed above and ideas off the top of my head:

  1. complementary colors (from Lgsoltek)
  2. doppelgängers
  3. dark and light
  4. warm and cold
  5. similar names
  6. same brand
  7. nice combo
  8. seasonal: spring (from evyxmsj)
  9. seasonal: summer
  10. seasonal: fall
  11. seasonal: winter
  12. Geographic - not sure what to list here, so just mentioning it (continents? countries? maybe use your country's colors?)
  13. ink feast (pick inks that look like food - I reserve green and brown - looks like beef and broccoli  )
  14. clash of the colors (two colors that so do NOT look good together)
  15. favorites (two+ inks you really love)
  16. "I can't decide" (inks of the same general color where you can't decide which one you like best)
  17. "you suck" (inks you own but don't really like much)
  18. nib-focus: ef / f (inks that look best in a finer nib)
  19. nib-focus: broad / stub (inks that look best in a fat nib)
  20. Hangin' in the shade (inks that shade)
  21. Sheenn (multiple inks that sheen)
  22. Shimmer-fest (multiple inks that shimmer)
  23. Good ink! (inks that are well-behaved on cheap paper)
  24. Bad ink! (inks that behave poorly even on good paper - though I'm not sure I have any)
  25. Go team! (inks close to the colors of your favorite sports (or other?) team)
  26. What I'm reading (inks close to the cover colors of the book you're reading)
  27. Coordin-ink-tion (fill your pens with inks that match the pen color)
  28. Alphabet soup (every ink name (not including brand) has to start with a different letter)
  29. Major holidays often have colors associated with them, so that could make up one or more weeks (could do specific holidays or choose your own - favorite holiday one week and least favorite holiday the next)

Hopefully that'll help get more ideas rolling (by no means to I expect all those to be used - just throwing them out there).

WOW! I love your list! I'd be glad to contribute to most of those options...

Thanks, guys!

One more idea came to mind: inks you've seen others used in the last month.

Ha! Maybe that should be a "wild card" - you can use it to replace any week you want. :D

So, here's my contribution for the week. Sorry about the lighting on the page —it's a very dark and dreary Sunday morning here in Indianapolis, and the overhead light casts a yellowish glare...

That doesn't look very much like blood to me. There's a kind of orange pink tone to it. You need Montblanc's Hitchcock in your life, Herbert!

Had some Hitchcock, but it's almost gone. I used the Clay Red since it does look like blood —after it dries. ;)

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Create a Ghostly Avatar and I'll send you a letter. Check out some Ink comparisons: The Great PPS Comparison

Don't know where to start?  Look at the Inky Topics O'day.  Then, see inks sorted by color: Blue Purple Brown Red Green Dark Green Orange Black Pinks Yellows Blue-Blacks Grey/Gray UVInks Turquoise/Teal MURKY

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
