Waterman Phileas Kulture - Very First Impressions

Today it started up without a single skip an the ink is the brilliant medium blue that kon-peki is supposed to be (not overconcentrated dried out kon-peki). Liquid electrical tape seems to have done the trick!

Cool. Any chance of seeing a picture of the cap after modifications? (even if just the inside, if nothing is visible from outside) I know that may be an impossible photo to take, so if not, that's OK.

Thanks! That's really nice - nothing (as far as I can tell) shows from the outside - no damage or cloudiness or anything. And just a black puddle inside. I'm guessing this is more elastic, or something, and that's why it doesn't break when you move the clip. I may have to try this. You can get the blue pen for less than $30 on Amazon. Going now to see if they have liquid electrical tape and Naptha. :)

You should be able to get both at any larger hardware store.

The liquid tape is great for a lot of things. It is elastic, it's intended to be flexible. Don't try to use the brush that came with it for this purpose- I used a small disposable model painting brush but any paintbrush you don't care about (because it'll get gooped up and ruined) will work. It just has to be small enough to comfortably fit down inside the cap.

Weird, mine doesn't dry out. Not sure if mine is a "kulture"

It is a late 90's model.

Not every Kultur has this problem with the air-hole drying out the ink: at least I haven't noticed it happening in mine.

IMO, it's not so bad that everyone will see it - but if you live in a drier climate, where evaporation is a noticeable problem, then you'll see it with this pen. I noticed it immediately.

Or you could be right, and some pens don't have the problem (as bad as others?) - who knows, maybe there are different manufacturing facilities involved.

Thanks - I was wondering about that - do I drip it in there, or... Brush it on - got it.

I have three Kultures and one doesn't dry out as quickly the other two. Probably depends on how well the clip is seated to the cap.

Yep, and clean up with naptha on a cotton swab. :)

  • 5 years later...

The clip is where the air leak is and it is a lot. Since it is spring loaded, the movement precludes using a solid glue or even bee's wax, although bee's wax will work if loaded just enough not to reach the nib while attached. Silicone glue, or putty (ear plug, trimmed) is best but use a long tube to carefully fill only the finial end if liquid glue. An expanding earplug is the most reversible fix and seals well. Without this fix, it will dry within an hour. Very sloppy design choice and Waterman should be ashamed

The drying issue is why I stopped using my Kulturs a few years ago.  Even with sealing the clip with glue, they still dried out.

It looks like a newer edition of the Kulture in blister pack with cartridge, so definitely a school pen.

I gather that they had to widen the space next to the clip to comply with pen caps anti chocking regulations.

I wish they had emulated Lamy hide the breather hole in the design, on top of the cap or wherever they put it on the Phileas which doesn't dry out.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
