lol I have a stubborn writing hand: It has part of my mind of it's own ; )

Have you tried the 3776 before buying it?

I also find the c74 too thin, and the 3776 seems a bit fatter and easier to hold.

I wanted to love the Pelikan m205. It's a great pen, but I personally didn't like the step down from the body to the piston knob. It's not bad if you hold the pen vertical, but I hold my pen more horizontal in the web under my knuckle where the step down made its presence known : (

Did the step down 'cut' or marked your flesh while writing or was it just unconfortable?

I do prefer gripping "forefinger up", with index finger lower in the pen and thumb in the location of the step down from the body to the piston knob.

I excluded the Pilot 823 so my battle for next year is between the M205 and Century 3376. I will probably end up buying both in the years to come but the first one will probably be the 3376 Bourgogne, it is just lovely.

I tried a friend's Black 3776 B a while back briefly and what I can remember is:

  • A smooth nib with a pencil feedback
  • The section fit well as long as I wasn't trying to hold it up high near the step down
  • It was on the lighter side uncapped, which I now prefer
  • It was on the shorter side uncapped, but not too short.

I can't describe it accurately enough to paint a reliable enough picture, I feel.

The sharp plastic edge rubbed on my skin causing it to redden. It was uncomfortable. I found myself trying to accommodate by not moving the pen on the web of my hand, but that was impossible.

BUT Mind you, I hold the pen in a horizontal position in the web between the knuckles of my thumb and forefinger, just under the knuckle of the forefinger.

If someone holds a pen more vertical resting the body of the pen above the knuckle of the forefinger (on the forefinger itself) I don't think that stepdown would be an issue unless they had very large man hands.

AND that vertical posture does work better for lightweight, shorter nibbed pens like the m205 (and others like the Pilot custom 74).

If you have small hands the horizontal position with the m205 may be alright. I have Male Medium Large Hands.

I think the platinum 3776 is quite lovely as well. The 3776-B I tried was Black (gold trim), but I found the color to be flat and disappointing, but I have a Chartres Blue version on the way, which looks beautiful, and the Bourgogne is just as beautiful a Burgundy IMO. I love that they made them semi translucent, and they hit a bullseye on those two colors.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
