Rarest Pen Color

Waltz For Zizi

Recommended Posts

I actually have a file on my laptop sorting my pens by color, just for curiosity's sake. Okay, it's really 2 files -- one is a list AND the other was because I was learning how stuff on iNumbers besides the spreadsheet function work (and am not a little OCD , so I have have bar and pie charts.

And I have zero pens that are orange. Not surprising, though, because I hate the color. Next would be pink (2), followed by yellow (3). Then there's a tie between metallic gold (as opposed to yellow -- it includes the 2 Morrison filigree overlay ringtops, and the "Champagne Gold" colored Jinhao 599), purple/magenta (which includes both the Lamy Safari Dark Lilac and the Parker 51 Plum Demi), metallic silver (separate from grey, the way metallic gold is separate from yellow) and Miscellaneous/Multicolored (which includes the Parker Vector which looks like it was stolen from a Mondrian painting, as well as the two [currently dead] Pilot Varsities -- but which does NOT include pens with metal caps or the late, lamented M200 Café Crèmes, because cream/brown is a category); all of those categories have (4) pens in them.

The most? Black (weird, because I'm not wild about black -- but when you find pens in the wild you don't get a choice... ;)) at 23 pens; followed (not surprisingly) by blue (at 18). I have enough teal and turquoise pens (such as the 2 51 Vacs in Cedar Blue, and the Teal 51 Aero) to have made them their own category. White and grey got lumped in together, but red and Burgundy didn't.

I have more green (8) and clear (12) pens than I thought; but most of the green pens are Esterbook J series Mackerels, and the reason I have as many clear pens as I do is because of the 5 Noodler's Charlie eyedroppers.

Mind you, this is all completely anecdotal evidence. I actually like yellow -- I just don't have many yellow pens....

The Color out of Space, perhaps?

I expect pink is fairly uncommon, although I've seen exceptions.

Who knows what Lovecraftian ink would go in it?

I have had cause to interact with Disney Marketing a few times, and they objected strenuously to putting a character in a yellow costume, because for some reason, yellow togs don’t sell.

Yes, I know Belle, but I’ve never believed that any Disney Marketing decision was ever reason-based.

Sand, or flat beige.

Interesting. It might also be that yellow (and red for that matter) can be difficult to photograph. The color changes with the light more so that others. But, also interesting, when people photograph flowers, they tend to gravitate to red and yellow flowers.

I said to keep it simple. How about coquelicot, glaucous, fulvous, smaragdine etc? Have you seen them used?

No, actually, I haven't. Those seem to be rarer, like politeness.

You are referring to colors that have actually been used, right? I think Pelikan made some pens with unusual colors such as aubergine, sandy brown or yellow, etc.

Well, having nothing much better to do this evening (well, I do, but I'm easily distracted), I looked up the Waltz for Zizi's list of words (because I like learning silly words). And well:

corn poppy red (aka, red); *either* yellowish-green (a color that Lamy is *entirely* too fond of) or light blueish grey; tawny (aka, yellowish brown, aka tan -- and then you get some stupid Edward Albee dialogue about "cream" verses "ecru" verse "wheat" B)); and emerald green (of course then then you have the argument about how blue-green "emerald" is supposed to be).

You're welcome.

I do not like pens in the gamma ray region of the EM spectrum. Too carcinogenic...

I would say white is the rarest.

+1

That white just doesn't stay white is probably a factor.

Shouldn't phonics be spelled with an f?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
