Monteverde Luna Desk Pen Reviews?

Anyone have one of these or know of a place for good reviews. I'm not seeing much out there which initially lends me to the belief that it is not popular and could be because it is not very good.

I'm looking for a set of desk pens I can keep at work. I take notes and often need to write a line or 2, then work on the PC for 5-10 minutes. All the pens I want to use are all screw caps and I'd much rather have a desk pen set. I currently am using 2 Platinum Plasiers and a Pilot Metro with a plumix stub nib on it because of the snap caps.

I have found Platinum and Pilot desk pens, but I prefer bigger nibs like medium and broad. Those nib sizes don't seem to be very common. I saw the Monteverde on a web search and thought that it might be the best compromise between the desk pen I am looking for and a larger nib size.

Looking for reviews, impressions, thoughts, other recommendations if you have any.

Thanks in advance.

I'm guessing from the reads and lack of responses that this is not a very popular pen. Given the price is not that expensive, I might pick it up and review it. I'll keep looking at the thread here from time to time to see if anyone else updates it.

Try an Esterbrook, should be somewhat easy to find.

The Fountain Pen Hospital are advertising the Monteverde Luna on their website. Given they sell high quality pens and the price they are offering it for is reasonable.

Hi Gryphon, et al,

I do not want to throw cold water on your ambitions, but I do want to point out the obvious... you see from the picture that the Monteverde Luna points straight up... so this pen will not have the natural, easy access of the traditional, canted desk pen.

Although, your post did prompt me to buy a desk pen set, (in fact, I bought two sets... one for home and one for the office. :D),... but I went with the Platinum version with medium nibs and the double pen stand... direct from Japan.

If you like, I'll let you know what I think of them when they arrive. (Which will be mid-November, since they're coming from Japan).

My other issue with the Luna; although this one is far more subjective, because many are tickled pink with their Yafa pens, but I had a Prima and a Duragraph... and both had MAJOR ink starvation issues. The Prima I returned and the Conklin I threw out in disgust. (But plenty of others love theirs... so, who knows ).

Be well and whatever pen you choose, I hope it really rings your chimes. :D

Just to follow-up... alluding to your original post: I forgot to stress the Platinum set is available with medium nibs, (I prefer mediums and broads, too),... and a double stand,... I got mine direct from Japan, but Goulet does carry the medium nib, (at this time); however, I have not found a U.S. dealer that carries the double pen stand. So, I went to Japan (via Amazon) and got it all there. :)

Another option would be to pick up a used Sheaffer or Parker desk set. I have a two-pen Parker 45 set that I use daily--- one is a fountain pen the other a less used ballpoint. Desk sets are often less than $20 on eBay. I also like the Esterbrook idea. Someone on this forum converted a Jinhao 159 into a desk model by affixing the cap to a block of wood with a screw... or there's always a MB desk set ;)

In one respect the Luna desk pen is practical for a small desk. I have an Esterbrook desk pen which I find inconvenient in fact gets in the way given the small area of my writing desk. An upright pen such as the Luna now I've discovered it would be my ideal choice. If gryphon doesn't have to reach too far for a pen the Luna may well work.

My generation was able to accommodate twin desk pen sets such as the Sheaffer where there were larger desk tops.

Hi Pickwick,

You raise a valid point I had not thought of...I have large desks both at home and at work... so I have to reach for a desk pen.

However, if you're in a more confined space, I can see the Luna's vertical design being a definite advantage and the traditional, angled design being a definite liability.

Be well all. :)

It's a cool design, and at an affordable price point: beside the Platinum desk pen, there are not many valid alternatives, at least since rOtring dropped the stand for the Artpen. I will most definitely pick one up when available through Amazon Italy.

Also, looking forward to the review when it'll be available.

Thanks all for chiming in.

Desk space is not an issue at work. At home I do have a smaller desk. I think that I will ask Santa for the Luna and then see what comes of it.

For the price, and being able to pick up the Platinum from Goulet for $12....seems like a no brainer. I too like medium/broad 1.1mm italics better than fine or extra fines. I have 2 Platinum Plaisirs one in fine and one in medium and while both are nice, I do like the line and feel of the medium more. I think I will grab a Platinum from Goulet and see how it fairs.

My ideal plan would be to have 2 sets of desk pens, one for at home and one for at my off site office. In other words, I'd really like to have 4 total a blue and black in each location....so I have room to experiment a little.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
