Hello! I'm trying to collect white/ivory pens, but I don't want to have doezens of cheap jinhaos and lingmos, or other cheap brand, and also not extremely expensive one. I might like the statue of zeus pelikan a lot, but it's too expensive for me to be comfortable using it daily, everywhere. Well I guess I'm not trying to collect them, but to own a few nice ones. I own 3 right now (A caran d'ache leman, a montegrappa fortuna, and the Pelikan m600 pink, which is mostly white), I will definitely buy the white tortoise, and I have also another 3-4 pens on my radar right now, and all of them cost exactly the same (+/- 10$), maybe the sailor a little more. Which one should I buy, if I could only buy one. It doesn't matter my prefferences on what I like, I want to know what is more appealing to everyone else.

Are you buying these pens for collecting or for writing? Pelikan for untroubled writing. The others for display and filling out a collection.

I have a sub-collection of red pens. Most are just dustables, though.

Bexley Pen Company makes great pens and have a few white ones that are great to use and good to look at.

To write with them, of course. I even sold some pens (rollerbals), extremely cheap just because they were collecting dust, and I hate useless things. I don't want to own 50+ pens and write with each one only 7 days a year. 10-20 is enough variety for me, that's why I want to buy only pens that deserve it.

I know that pelikans are great writers, but I kinda feel their section too short in the 400, 600 series, and the rest are not white. I wonder what the intuition feels in the hand, it has no threads, and the ribbed ivory is extremely beautiful, in my opinion.

I try to restrict myself on buying pens that are available in my country, without ordering them overseas.

The pen that I am enjoying using the most right now is a Sheaffer VFN. It's quite cheap (sells for ~10 USD over here) and a little slim but feels good and writes nicely. It's a little unusual in that it has an attractive matte finish, where most of my pens tend to be glossy. Although I haven't seen it in person, they do have a white version. Something to consider perhaps?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
