Week #36 / 3 Sep: Charlie The Unit Of Sheen - 2017 Weekly Ink Project

Recommended Posts

As legend has it, we the ink people worship Mr Charlie Sheen for he has given his name (either that or we have taken his name) to measure sheen, a property of ink many of us seek after, as can be seen for example in this 35 page long thread (sadly that wretched PhotoBucket ruined a lot of the images). This week, we shall commemorate Mr Sheen by using the sheeniest ink we have. Don't forget to define this unit of measurement* (still a subject of debate!) and tell us how many charlies your ink has.

As usual, don't forget to share with us your choice of ink, your writing, drawing, doodling or anything with the ink in this thread. You can take a photo, make a scan, or even better, write letters and CRV reviews (what is a CRV?) and mail them to the many ink pals here. You are welcome to check back on this thread even when we've gone past this week.

Next week: Faster (drying), Higher (sheen), Stronger (shading)

I've used a lot of sheeny inks, but none like Organic Studios Thoreau Walden Pond. Sheens on almost every paper I've tried it on.

For comparison, I've paired it with Iroshizuku Tsutsuji —a great sheener, but mainly on good quality paper. The overview is here:

And now for the sheen details. They BOTH have a rich RED sheen:

Having come up for air after the birth of my eldest daughter's twins, I will try to resume participating.

I am loving Organics Studio Walden Pond Blue and Nitrogen. I would include Tsutsuji, but I already posted it for my most expensive ink. Nitrogen shows that sheen on every letter, like Diamine Majestic Blue on steroids. And Walden Pond Blue sheens even in fine nibs.

I have read reviews complaining of short shelf life on these, but they are from a while back, and I am betting these problems have been solved. These inks almost have more sheen than base color.

Sadly played my joker with Organics Studio Royal Blue a couple of weeks or so ago - and I'm determined to use a different ink each time B)

I present what I deem to be about a "7" on the Charlie'O'meter.

Oh no. Now I need Edelstein Tanzanite.

Ha.

Glad to hear it.

I've not used mine for ages. Nice to see it out again. That's part of the joy of this project :)

Even tho I do not care for the Blue Greens, a swab of this ink convinced me to purchase it. I like the reasoning suggested in the earlier post; I can only hope other inks will be able to follow this pattern. I could love an ink of ANY color if it could exhibit this sheen! (More Charlie + Martin "to the MAXIMUM power", please.)

Nice inks and pics! I'm at my holiday home (life is tough ;) ) and have less inks here (~20). Here is mine, sadly my photos could ever do the ink justice

I have placed my wallet and credit card in a drawer, which I locked, and I swallowed the key. In order not to buy some of this magnificent Walden Pond Blue ink

And yes indeed, your photos are superb! Thanks a lot for all the eye candy

Wow! That's amazing sheen.

Diamine Majestic Blue is my most sheeny ink:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
