One of my favorite inks of all time.

Thanks! I must say -- here and now -- that although I'm definitely not a N. fan, this is one of my N. favourites which I do happen to have had for years now...

I kind of made this ink on accident. I wanted to make my noodlers dragon's napalm a little less eye searing and have some permanence, so I added some heart of darkness.

The result is almost a perfect copy of this.

Yes, the BB of the Pelikan is very juicy! It makes the ink come out very well! I love the pen, but it needs big writing :-)

It is interesting that this comes up (gets the review) today! :)

I had been researching the last few days what is the closest best replacement for this ink?

The color is an all-time favorite of mine that I cannot do without, but the nib creep Noodler's Inks has on my pens is tiresome and I am done with it.

Would love to find a clone by Diamine, Herbin, Iroshizuku, Pelikan etc. While typing this I already know that 3 of these brands do not have anything similar :/

Based on the name, I'd expected a black with just a bit of red highlight. This strikes me as more of a burgundy: it's definitely not too black.

@Pravda

Red black must be trending. JetPens' August 15 blog post is a comparison of red black inks. Personally, I recommend checking out KWZ Iron Gall Red, and KWZ standard Maroon. Those are the darkest burgundy/red black inks I've seen.

I think it's pretty accurately named: it's red or black depending on line intensity. Just like blue-black inks are usually some shade of dirty navy and are not black with a hint if blue.

Lovely color!

  • 6 months later...

I think that any ink that gets this close to my favorite ink, black swan in aussie roses, just makes me think "okay, but why don't I just go use that ink instead"

Black swan in australian roses is also one of my favorites. This one is more red, australian roses is more purplish

Why don't get both? ;-)

Because BWAR is my favorite ink, so why not just use it!

Do you recall what ratio you used? I am looking for an ink like this, but don't want to buy a bottle. I have bottles of both Dragons Napalm and Heart of Darkness.

I loved the free sample I got with an order from Vanness, it looked exactly like the color in your review but I was hesitant to order a bottle because of the frequent complaints about color inconsistency between batches. I finally broke down and ordered one and, yep, it's much brighter than the sample was, not bright, cherry red but definitely more "darkish red" than "Red Black". :(

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

Are you using the same pen to compare? For instance my dip nib of a couple of vintage pens will make every ink look really dark, whereas certain other pens (and nibs) put down very conservative lines that look pale. This review shows a dip nib (high concentration), a wet BB nib pen (high concentration), and a splash (high concentration), so you're basically mostly seeing the darker side of this ink.

Yes, same pen, a J. Herbin roller and while it does lay down a fine line it was dark, just like the review samples. The difference with the new bottle was immediately noticeable.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
