Hi From South Texas

Hi -- I'm Chris from Texas and I've just recently started using fountain pens again -- I used to write with them in school many years ago! Actually, I started in January of this year (2017) by getting a Pilot Metropolitan and some ink samples -- and my interest took off in a big way after that. I'm finding that I almost never use anything but fountain pens now -- except for when I need to use a felt tip for something particular.

I found this network last night when I goggled to find out why I was having some issues with a pen. It helped me so much to read that others had been thru the exact same thing -- and I decided to join here so I could learn even more and share my enthusiasm for fountain pens with like minded people. There is no one else in my "in person" life right now using fountain pens!!!! That's so sad ... I will have to change that.....

My little collection of pens is growing and I am becoming much more picky about what I write with ... to .... there will be pens to share with family and friends!!!!

At this point, my primary interest is inks! I enjoy being able to experiment with many shades of ink and I find it really fun to work with ink samples. I mean, of course it's all about the pens too but what draws me the most to the hobby is the ink. I write all the time in multiple notebooks and I take notes a lot for classes and for research and writing so there's always a pen in my hand ... but now I have control over the colors and properties of the ink I'm using -- which I absolutely love. So, that's it, that's me. I hope to get to know people and learn a lot here. I was very timid at first to try new things with my pens and ink -- but now I'm using ink syringes, ink samples and really learning how to keep things flowing!!!

Sincerely,

Chris

Welcome, Chris !

I, too, use fountain pens almost exclusively. I keep a ballpoint pen (Please forgive the vulgar term. :lticaptd:) in my car, for notes while driving. I am always watching for inexpensive, good-functioning fountain pens to share with beginners.

Your fresh perspective and experience will be valuable to new users of fountain pens. I hope you will ask any questions, that come to mind. We have a deep well of information among the members. I learn a lot from the answers to questions, but especially the discussions that follow .

Which fountain pens did you use in school ?

Write with joy.

Welcome to the obsession! Pens, ink, paper - the combinations are endless; finding the perfect combination is a worthy pursuit. Good Luck.

May we live, not by our fears but by our hopes; not by our words but by our deeds; not by our disappointments but by our dreams.

Welcome to the Fountain Pen Network! :W2FPN: We're glad to have you!

If you're really into inks, you should look into some dip pens. They are really good for testing new inks!

Welcome to our warm nook of the internet, where you can share this beautiful hobby with good and friendly people. Or as we say in low Saxon: Mooi a'j dr bint! (Good you're here.)

Hello Chris and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Welcome to FPN from North Carolina! I also got "sucked in" (in a good way) by purchasing a Pilot Metropolitan and some ink -- talk about a gateway pen. I have since found other pens that I love much more, though -- what pens have you acquired since?

Enjoy your time here!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
