My new Nakaya 17mm Portable Cigar String Rolled Aka-tamenuri with an EF nib. This is my favorite Urushi finish/color. It is also the first Aka tamenuri finish I've owned with Urushi on the threads. My previous pens had exposed Ebonite.

A great pen and great shape for those who like a thicker pen. You also get the elongated grip section I prefer. I don't know why the 17mm option is not more popular. The only downside for me is the nib looks smaller than it would on a thinner pen.

Enjoy your new treasure.

Yeah, a Namiki #50 nib would be AWESOME in this pen!

I love the Aka-tamenuri finish on your portable cigar, it seems a lot richer than the regular portables.

Very nice!

Seeing posts like this make me hanker after another Nakaya. Nothing wrong with that, though.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful pen.

Here is a picture of my Toki-Tamanuri string wrapped Portable Cigar. It has a Gold Zogan and the Dragon 2 stopper. It has a medium Elastic nib. post-133807-0-25188300-1501847228_thumb.jpgpost-133807-0-00471400-1501847264_thumb.jpg

Beautiful pen! That's the first Aka-tamenuri I've seen with urushi on the threads, although it's common with the other finishes. Did you have to special order it that way?

I wonder why Nakaya leaves the threads black on the Aka-tamenuris. To me, it breaks the pen up aesthetically.

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

What a beautiful nib! I agree with Dr. Joseph M. Vitolo: a larger (more proportionate) nib would look better but overall I love that pen!

No, that is the way it came. It was 'In Stock' at nibs .com

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
