Write Here Shrewsbury

Write Here has serviced my fountain pen addiction for a number of years and I never go to Shrewsbury without calling in. I was in there on Tuesday for some ink and stationary.  On former occasions I've found the usual assistant to be enthusiastic and knowledgable.  Now with everyone wearing masks and having long hair just at the moment I can't be sure whether it or not it was the usual assistant or someone new.  Either way he was courteous and helpful and I was perfectly satisfied with the service.  And if he is new then it's possible that he only started on Monday...

I suspect that like everyone else just reopening after months of lockdown closure, it must be very hard work marrying up where everything is and who knows where to find it. I actually ordered from them last week, and had a very different experience - John couldn't have been more helpful, and went to a lot of effort to look for something (and it was something really quite small and not very important) that I wanted that was showing as out of stock, but had in fact been 'tidied up'. I know he was also having some website problems with the database not updating quite as it should.

As with most of the UK pen retailers, I've always found a phone call goes a long way to making sure things work - and I would always call ahead if I were going to visit a store with a view to looking at anything in particular.

I would hope that after three plus months of internet sales only, where they've not had to run a physical shop, their stock levels would be accurate on their website.

I'm glad other people have had more positive experiences at Write Here than I have. However, after two bad experiences, I'll be buying over the internet from places like The Writing Desk.

Favourite physical shop experiences so far- P.W.Akkerman in Amsterdam, or Casa de la Estilográfica in Barcelona. Both shops have been very knowledgable and helpful, with Casa de la Estilográfica doing wonders with my poor Spanish.

Have not visited La Couronne du Comte, but they've given excellent service over the internet (pre-Brexit) hopefully I'll get a chance to visit them in the near future.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
