Congratulations!

The store front looks great, and I just took a look at the video on your website and it's really enticing...

It was a lovely shop before the renovations, and I am sure is now even better - I found myself in Shrewsbury a couple of months ago and quite by chance stumbled in and met John , who introduced me to the world of wonder that is Cleo Skribent. I left with an ebonite treasure which is now permanently inked.

A real reminder of how great a bricks and mortar store can be. I can't wait to go back :)

Write Here are real supporters of the pen shows in the UK and whatever support and publicity can be offered to the business then this can only be good news for the hobby, particularly when the UK has so few specialist pen shops.

My sister and Brother-in-law used to live in Shrewsbury [years ago] and having seen your video just now, I wished that your shop was there when I used to visit them then!

It looks really good, and so unusual in this day and age, when it seems that the world has gone over to 'computer-sales' for almost everything that people want to buy. There is nothing quite like the pleasure that personal service can add to the experience, when trying out a new pen!

All the very best to you, and you new venture.

Truffle Finder. :) :D

I just want to reach into that photograph and... move that design of tiles on the step over to the right. :gaah:

Good spot. Now I want to do that as well :o

Maybe if more of us make the point about the tiles on this thread, then some creative person might just replace all the tiles in one go!

Still, it's great news that Shrewsbury has now got a bricks and mortar 'Pen Shop'!

Truffle Finder. :) :D  :excl:

I bought 3 Cleo Skribent pens from John Hall recently, including a purple/black Ebonite. Really impressed with them.

But possibly with, a view to the colour scheme, with tiles of neon green... Suddenly I find I like those tiles exactly the way they are! :D

If youse folks with Cleo Skribents feel the urge to share some observations about them, btw, I for one would be most interested. Not here, obviously, as I've done more than enough hijacking for one thread.

I guess I could tape a pen to that kite in the window and write with it ;) Hey I know - I'll call it my "Sky Writer" pen (yuk-yuk).

It's beautiful.

Hello

I was lucky to visit this shop a couple of months ago ina quick visit to Shrewsbury. It is a near perfect B&M pen store, and the people are very knoledgeable. I bought a lovely set of envelopes and paper letter from G Lalo, Vergé de France, which I am enjoying for my letter writing. I wish I could have access to such a lovely shop in my area ( Devon).

Best of luck

  • 1 month later...

Poped into see John this evening who was a real pleasure to meet. He was good enough to accommodate my indecisiveness and sold me my first demonstrator in a TWSBI mini which I've inked and am delighted (so far) with!

A lovely shop, lots of beautiful pens and some excellent advice and help.

  • 3 years later...

Popped into this shop today, and had my second disappointing experience.

Having pursued their website, I noted they had stock of a couple of pens I fancied trying, and was all ready to purchase one of them. It turns out they didn’t have them in stock, and was told their website bears no relation to what they actually have in stock.

Please be careful if ordering from their website.

I was also served by someone who wasn’t John, and he had to pop upstairs to ask John some of my questions. His FP knowledge didn’t seem that great, a similar experience to when I last popped in a few years back.

I do want to support them, as their aren’t many physical FP shops in my area (that aren’t The Pen Shop). However, given the experience seems variable when John isn’t available, and the stock levels don’t match up, I’ll be buying online elsewhere.

I suspect that like everyone else just reopening after months of lockdown closure, it must be very hard work marrying up where everything is and who knows where to find it. I actually ordered from them last week, and had a very different experience - John couldn't have been more helpful, and went to a lot of effort to look for something (and it was something really quite small and not very important) that I wanted that was showing as out of stock, but had in fact been 'tidied up'. I know he was also having some website problems with the database not updating quite as it should.

As with most of the UK pen retailers, I've always found a phone call goes a long way to making sure things work - and I would always call ahead if I were going to visit a store with a view to looking at anything in particular.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
