Favourite Fountain Pens?

Couple of old posts from Parker Duofold. 😇

Not sure how I differentiate between one good pen and another, I like them all otherwise we part company.

There was once a similar thread, 'Your house is on fire, family and pets are safe, essential documents are gathered up (perhaps this now means your lap top) is there a single pen that you would stop to collect?

I would probably collect the Lamy 2000 out of a house on fire, though I barely ever write with it. It was my first good pen and I always have the hope that I will find it comfortable and ride into the sunset with it.

My Kaweco Dia 2 has become a favourite-after tweaking the nib somewhat (it was writing dry from new). It's an excellent and solidly built pen which shares daily duties with a 51 Custom. Ink is Diamine Sapphire Blue.

In my experience the jinhao 51s are very attractive but the duality of materials throws the balance off just a little. I don't think the jinhao could dethrone your hero 616s for quickness of writing. Do you own a Parker 51 btw?

Here's a ramble:

I was just writing in my journal with a new-to-me Waterman Cartidge-Filler (with Serenity Blue, natch) - medium nib.

I am trying to remember if any pen I have owned was this nice a writer. Aside from one 14k Parker 45 (M) that I gave away, assuming I could easily find another like it, none of my many many Parkers new and old have written this smooth-but-not-too-smooth way.

I have a Snorkel that's pretty close, but it's the only Sheaffer that was this nice (again, new and old). No Edison or Estie. No Lamy - and again, I have owned many, including an L2K. Not the two Auroras I have owned.

Maybe Montblanc 146/149, but those particular nibs were stiffer and finer - and the medium 145 had horrible baby's bottom; I should have sent that one off for tuning, instead of selling it. (hopefully my soon to arrive 342 and 12 models will be this quality).

Maybe a gold Sailor writes like this? Smooth and a little soft, allowing just a hint of feedback. I have a 1911L medium on order, so we shall see. I also have a medium Waterman Taperite on order, so we shall see if a 1947 hooded nib will be as nice.

This pen makes me want to stop collecting Parkers and Esties immediately.🤯

If I had to choose...

Montblanc Noblesse/Slimline EF

Kaweco Copper Liliput

Salz Bros. Peter Pan BCHR ringtop eyedropper

and, for sentimental reasons...

Montblanc 3-42G F

If you are to be ephemeral, leave a good scent.

That is a very difficult question to answer, I have more pens that I like and consider favourites than the opposite...

I could not possibly list them.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
