Jinhao 992, Some Answers

On further inspection under strong light I had my doubt about how the end plug on the barrel are put on. Some others had try and successful in pulling the plug out so look like its not fused but the plug is very tight in almost all cases bar a few which leave me thinking its most likely a multi stage injection and not physically pushed onto but both method are possible. That said my clear 992 had been ED operating for weeks without any leak nor ink getting in betweem the plug so I guess it can be variation between individual samples. In any cases, ZJinhao never claim this to be ED operable so any mod is really user's own undertaking of a hack

They tend to have small cracks around the plug - look under magnification. Even if they don't, the plug can leak. I could blow into the body and hear the leaking. I slathered the end with clear nail polish to seal it up, but I'm worried about the cracks spreading - so I'm using the converters for now.

I've checked with my trusty 9X and 15X loupe under strong / good light ( LED flashlight and light table ). None of my demonstrators shown any crack or stress mark. Cannot tell with the opaque ones but their material IMHO seems more pliable than the clear ones. With so many reporting cracks and the fact that its so tight ( but its not glued onto ) ; that is what it leave me the reasoning that its done using a 2 stage / multi stage injection. Its a common industrial process used on thermoplastic these days mostly on toys but of course on many household plastic items.

I have my theory about the cracks but its more about engineering but I can tell that the end plug simply are not designed to be air tight nor the seal there water proof. I am still in the process of trying to ply away the top of the cap from my Coffee Transparent demonstrator as well as the barrel end plug. trying to see how the pen actually all fits and well if all goes well, I would hack another cocktail / hybrid color combo

What bothers me is the fact, that the barrel is made for japanese cartridges, but the nozzle for standard international.

So you can only use one single short cartridge, as the barrel is too short for a long or two short ones.

I was bothered by this too. I had hoped to be able to slip a long international cartridge into the Jinhao 992, but I got quite a surprise when I tried to do that :wallbash: .

When you say that, "the barrel is made for japanese cartridges," what do you mean? I think that Pilot and Platinum are Japanese companies that have their own proprietary cartridges, so I'm not sure that there is a "Japanese cartridge."

Does anyone know if Jinhao makes their own proprietary cartridge that has a larger capacity than the short international cartridge and that does fit into the Jinhao 992? If not then I really have to wonder why they reduced the usefulness of the 992 model by making the barrel incapable of taking the long international cartridge.

When I've stuck a long international cartridge into the Jinhao 992s that I'm testing right now the closed end of the cartridge gets stopped from going down the barrel any farther by some ribs that come from the tapered end of the barrel and go forward a ways. When comparing the long international cartridge with the Jinhao converter that comes with the 992s I see that the cartridge is only about one-eighth of an inch (0.125" or about 3.1750 mm) longer than the converter is. I have been wondering if it's these ribs that stop the long international cartridge from fitting into the pen rather than just the reduced diameter of the barrel itself.

I'm wondering if getting rid of those longitudinal ribs will allow a long international cartridge to be used. Has anyone else been able to make measurements or anything that might shed light on this idea? Has anyone tried removing those ribs in some way to see if a long international cartridge will fit in the 992 then?

So far the Jinhao 992s I bought are testing out quite nicely, and I like a screw cap fountain pen. If the 992 could use a large ink supply that would be great.

On a sacred quest for the perfect blue ink mixture!

I meant that this pen is a copy of, (or let's say is inspired by) a Sailor procolor 500. So the barrel has the dimensions for a sailor cartridge. If it was ~5mm longer a long standard cartridge (or 2 short) would fit into.

I've seen Jinhao cratridges which seem to be a bit longer than the standard.

I have no long cartridge at hand now. But as you can see, the two short catridges go all down to the very end but still dont fint into.

I do not think the Jinhao 922 are designed for fitting International standard nor Sailor cartridge , Jinhao use the Hero standard for all their current production pens, including the 992. Although some international standard cartridge will fit its still only a case of forcing the cartridge onto something wider than originally designed ( by roughly 0.2mm, and that's why it will still fit most of the time, the plastic allow that kind of leeway )

BTW I finally finish my load of ink inside my clear 992 Eye-Dropper tester and it survive the whole load of ink ( and more than a month of regular use ) without any leakage nor any ink seeping into the end plug. Despite that I would only consider myself lucky and would still recommend against using it for ED without any mod since its quite clearly not designed to do so and there are enough of reports of it not holding up unless properly modded.

Yes, Jinhao (and Hero) make cartridges that are of a length between long and short international cartridges. I am not sure they hold any more ink, though. Most international cartridges have a closed end the same thickness as the side walls of the cartridges. The J/H ones have a plug in the end about 0.25 inches (6mm) long which is wasted space as far as ink capacity is concerned.

For the most part I have had few troubles with dimensions using the Chinese cartridges in other pens or international cartridges in Chinese pens. When there is trouble, it is of the sort discussed above re whether the cartridge will fit inside the body. The recent Hero 7022 pens (not the classic ones with the same number) will not take short internationals because those flare out toward the closed end but they will take long internationals. I have had no problems with leaking at the seal between section and cartridge. I have had problems puncturing Chinese cartridges but that was usually with Chinese pens.

In any case, I do not recommend most of the Chinese cartridges I have tried. Most of my reviews can be found here:

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
