Someone posted about this on the "main" (and quite extensively vocal) thread discussing the dates and WTH was going on with the show).

I'll admit that I was hoping for it to be the weekend after, because that way I could actually go.... :(

It appears that the show organizer was playing hardball with the hotels in the area. The one that got the nod has a rate of $121 or more currently for that period of the calendar while the hotel from last year is now at $80 and a few of the comparable facilities in that area are in the $70s to $80s. So, how much is the difference between $119 and $80, times say 200 rooms? I estimate that the DC Supershow brings in an extra $5000 to $10000 for the weekend for whichever hotel hosts it, just in higher hotel rates.

Not much activity on their Facebook page. Only one 2017 posting that is for the 2017 show.

It's also posted on Susan Wirth's calendar. I've made my room & airline reservations.

See you there.

How much to rent the ballrooms for the weekend?

I was watching the Anderson Pens update on youtube and they mentioned the same dates.

I'll admit I was not thrilled that the new hotel doesn't have free wifi. That's probably not a huge deal all things considered, but I used it a lot to keep in touch with my family while traveling alone.

I believe Marriott followed suit of other chains a couple years back and offers free wifi to all of their rewards program members, regardless of status tier - definitely worth signing up!

This is one of my biggest pet peeves about higher end hotels (cheaper hotels usually have free wifi).

Yes. It is one of the reasons I try to stay in Choice Hotels instead. Free breakfast too.

I just checked rates. Less than $200 to fly, but $100 to train. I think I'm going to train it. Plus, that gives me an opportunity to read and practice with any new pens.

I suppose I should ask people who have gone to prior DC shows: is the con hotel worth the extra rate? I'll be paying a whole lot less to stay at one of my usual DC haunts. Add an uber to the hotel and when you add in free wifi and breakfast, I wind up way ahead. What would I be missing out on by not staying at the con hotel?

I stay at show hotel so I cam immerse myself in the show & only the show. Like the convenience. Meet lots of pen community people who also stay at the hotel. But you can save money staying elsewhere. If I had a relative in DC might be different........

+ what Chris said.

Also, after a long time on my 70 year old feet, it's nice to go to the room for a half hour. Then back to the hunt.

OK. In that case, since he hasn't updated the website and I have to make hotel reservations soon, does anyone know what the group code is to stay there so I can compare rates and distances?

Well, in the past I did stay at the site hotel, for several reasons, not the least of which being DC traffic and not knowing the area (and less expensive hotels). Plus, the previous site had a really nice indoor pool (one of the few places I've ever stayed where the water wasn't freezing cold in spite of the ambient air temperature) and hot tub.

I just called the hotel to book a room. Let them know you want the rate for the Fountain Pen Supershow room block. Pricing was $119/night. I also found out they have shuttle service that runs from 6:30am-8:30pm every hour on the half hour within a 3-4 mile radius if that helps anyone. It's been 5 years since I'll be back in DC for the pen show...can't wait!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
