Customized Ranga Model 5

When the group buy for the Model 5 pen was announced, I loved the red ripple version that Mr Mehandiratta posted, but I realized that the size of the pen might be too big for my hand.

So I contacted Mr. Mehandiratta and asked him about the size, and he suggested the Model 8 or that I contact Mr. Kandan and ask him to "downsize" the pen for me.

So I did that. And I have to say it was such a good experience to communicate with Mr. Kandan. He said "of course!" he could do that, and I looked at sizes and picked a size and options that I thought would work for me.

He said it would take a week to make the pen and then when he mailed it, it would be two to four weeks before I received it. (That was about April 5.) I got the pen yesterday.

It came in a lovely purple and cream box, along with a bulb syringe and a second Oliver pen (a demonstrator). And it is perfect for my hand, as you can see in the photo (on Flickr).

I chose a clipless pen in the red ripple ebonite that I liked so much.

I filled it immediately, and it wrote well right out of the box. I am assuming that Mr. Kandan tested it before he sent it.

If you want a custom pen, I recommend working with Mr. Kandan. His pens are quite affordable, and everything about the process and packaging and pen shows Mr. Kandan's pride in his work.

I look forward to ordering a pen from him in the future.

@Cleosmama - I'm happy that it worked so well for you, and jealous that you got your pen so fast! Mine was shipped on 22 March and I just saw it's still in Amsterdam waiting to be sent here... They needed nine days between receiving and putting it in the mail bag? So the fastest it can be here will be in another week...

Beautiful pen! Thank you for describing your experience with a custom order. Now I hope you enjoy your Ranga pen as much as I enjoy mine. I have jto admit that Kandan's personality and his skill are part of the great experience of owning these pens.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I am still enjoying the pen very much (right now, I have Oster Asterquiza Rot in it). It's such a smooth writer!

I'm waiting for a special ebonite eyedropper. Teal black ripple. Rounded ends. I'm just hoping the pen is not too large for me!

  • 1 year later...

Very elegant pen, Cleosmama. Is it simply a reduction in size of the original model 5, or are there other variations from the original? For example, does your model 5 have the same step down between body and section as on the standard version? Could you perhaps give us the measurements of your Model 5?

Regards

@Ruaidhri This was an absolutely wonderful bit of writing, and I hope that you're able to maintain the style once all of the medications are out of your system.  Take care and recover quickly!

These comments make me sad as I sympathise with Ruaidhri, having great difficulties in being taken seriously. Or being taken at all (no off-colors jokes, please!) In spite of overwhelming odds,  Ruaidhri -now I know how to spell it- made a courageous decision and stuck to it. I was diagnosed with a similar growth in a place I will not reveal. Oh, well, if you insist it was Mount Sinai Hospital. But I firmly intend to walk in Ruaidhri's footsteps, if he will let me, on my next visit to Dublin.

Was that the end of the Laboratory? Somehow the exactitude created a fully destructive device, as always!
