Judging from the photos, it looks like a crack & chips. I think the seller should accept return if you decide to do so. Now, I'm nervously waiting for the arrival of my pen which seems to be indefinite.

Surely this is a one off and not a common issue. I don't think you should worry. Just inspect it closely upon arrival. I've had mine for...what, two weeks now? I only just noticed it a few days ago despite spending more time than I probably should gazing at it, lol.

I'm so sorry that your pens was defective.

You should return it. Period. The fact that you inked it should make no difference: you paid (dearly) for a new pen, not a refurb. The alternative to get an new pen would be to get a new cap, but this would likely lead to an unsatisfying result in this kind of material.

It is sad that such a pen was able to leave the factory unnoticed!

I hope that this gets sorted out to your satisfaction.

I go back and forth about what I would do if given multiple options.

I really love the nib and I know if I return the whole pen I might get a nib that feels different or writes a different line. So, I'm hoping whatever the resolution, I can retain this specific nib. I'd actually be fine with them trying to send me just a replacement cap first. I know it's a gamble that the patterns could appear mismatched, but I'd be willing to try it. From the few pics of the pen I've seen, the pattern looks pretty consistent with mine, so maybe it wouldn't be an issue...

If Appelboom wants the whole pen back though, I will request that I retain the nib. It has nothing to do with the issue, after all. He could just keep the nib from the replacement pen I'm sent and we'd be even.

I hope you can get this problem resolved soon--please keep us posted as to the results and what you hear from
Appelboom. My guess is you'll get satisfactory results from such a reputable dealer. But I agree with the poster who lamented that such a problem shouldn't have left the Pelikan factory.

I wonder how closely they examine the pens when doing the QC checks? It's a small defect visually and would be easy to miss I guess. I also wonder if they literally check every single pen. My main concern is just the integrity of the material over the life of the pen -- I worry about cracks. If it weren't for that concern, I might take no action at all.

Have you heard back from Applebloom? I know it's a pain, but I'd definately send it back to them.

Hi Old Salt,

Nothing yet from Appelboom. In the past, there was usually a one business day delay getting a response to an email, so I would expect to have a reply tomorrow sometime. I'm a little on edge here...wondering how it will be handled. I really don't want to pay to send the whole pen back. I'd have to add insurance and it would be quite expensive. I doubt I'd get reimbursed for it either. I really hope they can just send me a replacement cap from Pelikan. Shipping the whole pen back and forth (with insurance!!!) is a costly waste for both the seller and customer in my opinion.

Mine arrived in Chicago from LCdC this morning. I hope it makes it through there quicker than it did when I ordered one prior to the Christmas season. That one stayed in Chicago about two weeks.

Regards

Jeff

They sent you a defective product, so they should pay for shipping. It is probably covered in their insurance anyway.

From what I've heard from Appelboom, you shouldn't worry (easier said than done, right?). I expect they will take good care of you.

For what is worth, mine was shipped through Chicago: it left The Netherlands last Tuesday and arrived today - record time for shipments through Chicago. So, there is hope!

Faster than mine Lam1... sent a week ago Saturday, through San Francisco (how'd they do that? last one went through NY), and arrived here in Rattlesnake Junction this Saturday. Inked it tonight with Smoky Quartz and it writes like a dream. This B nib puts down a very nice shady line on good paper. Have you inked yours yet?

Glad I jumped on this one (like there was any doubt... I'm addicted to them :lticaptd:)

Hi Bill,

No, I haven't inked mine yet. I'll probably ink it later tonight.

I'm glad that yours is a great writer. Those B nibs are great, aren't they?

Mine is a F, because that was the only M800 nib that I didn't have (although I had a monotone M805).

Now, Pelikan could do me a favor and release a Red M800 in this material later this year  .

Mine arrived today from TCDC... the tracking was crazy, it was on my desk but still tracked as at the depot.

Packing was excellent... outer box was dinged but the contents are perfectly unharmed.

The individual pen boxes were gift wrapped in beautiful blue paper with a strip of TCDC ribbon... almost too pretty to open. I got a Petrol Blue Safari at the same time... it is totally outclassed by the Pelikan.

Fortunately no cracks or chips, although I agree the colour looks different to the pre-sale photos... but still lovely and not being returned.

Filled with FPN Noodlers Galileo Brown, which suits it perfectly, the B nib is smooth with a reasonable degree of flex, moist but not wet.

:D :)

Glenn.

So I heard back from Appelboom this morning as expected. They have forwarded my pictures and the issue on to Pelikan and are awaiting a reply. I'm not sure if this is normal procedure or not, but there you have it.

It would seem the road to resolution will be a rather long one, unfortunately. I hope I am wrong and Pelikan replies quickly. Thankfully, I am still able to use the pen in the meantime. If I were not able to, this would be testing my patience.

Not what I was expecting. The pen is clearly defective, they don't need Pelikan's opinion to determine that.

I hope they will still resolve this to your satisfaction. This pen is way too expensive for you to go through that ordeal.

In principle, you are right. However, if I am patient, I might be able to push for them to just send me a cap. I'd rather not have to pay to ship this pen back. I'm guessing it would be close to 80 bucks to do so. Sure, I shouldn't have to pay for that myself, but in reality, I would probably have to eat it.

I'm sorry to hear that Appelboom is taking this approach. I agree with Lam1 that they shouldn't need to involve Pelikan. They sold you the pen and they should replace it. But, since they've now taken the issue to Pelikan, let's hope for a satisfactory resolution in a reasonable amount of time.

I don't see any reason to be concerned quite yet.

Since this is a new pen it's under warranty which is probably why Appelboom contacted Pelikan. Even if you send it back to Appelboom they'll send it to Pelikan anyways. This might save a step in the process if you can get a replacement directly from Pelikan. Pelikan may even have you ship to their domestic partner which would save money (even though they may pay for shipping).

I really like this kind of positive thinking, lol. I kind of doubt Chartpak will be involved though, since they don't honor warranty claims for pens purchased outside of the USA. Anyway, I'm strapped in and just along for the ride at this point.

At least the nib writes beautifully. I've already put two fills through it...

If you do end up having to send the pen back, ask if you can return it without the nib. I've done this in the past with other brands and they were amenable to my request.

Yes, this is my plan. I'm really curious how this is going to work out...

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
