What is a well-behaved dark purple from Diamine?

I really like Damson - it has a slightly 'dusty' look that appeals to me a lot and it always seems to behave well. For something with a bit more oomph, the Deep Dark Purple (Cult Pens Deep Dark series) is nice, though not particularly special (but great value).

Thank you.  I have often thought about Damson.  I am glad to know that it behaves well.

Impressions of the Diamine purples I've tried.

+1 Damson. It goes from a purple-leaning medium grey in a dry pen to a dusty, dark purple in a wet pen. I don't absolutely love it but I like it a whole lot and I think a 30ml bottle is definitely worth having at the price.

Deep Dark Purple has the colors I am looking for in my purple yams quest but, to me, the shading is weird: almost random and a fairly extreme shift between hues. Some people might like this but it looks busy and unpleasant to my eye. The behavior seemed good but I sold the bottle.

Monboddo's Hat is a pretty ostentatious dark purple - not my kind of color and, given the other purple inks you've previously listed as favorites, I suspect you wouldn't like it. Again, the behavior seemed good but I sold the bottle.

Amazing Amethyst is an interesting sort-of dusty color that I haven't warmed up to. I've kept it, though, because, even if I'm not too crazy about it so far, it's an interesting color and I think it might work for me if I find the right pen for it. My memory is that it is pretty dry.

I think Tyrian Purple is a beautiful color, half-way between purple and red, but I only really like it in wide nibs - normal I use it with dip pen nibs but it worked well in the cheapo Jinhao 992s with 1.5 and 1.9 nibs. As a writing ink - fine or medium nibs - I think it goes too red for me and it loses a lot of it's beauty and complexity. Other than dip pens I've only used it a little in a fine nibbled-pen but it seemed good for that little bit of use.

Winter Miracle is a fun dark purple sheening and shimmering ink - used in dip pens only. Very nice dark purple for what it is.

Finally, I've recently gotten Diamine Vivaldi and I love it - I think it will be one of my favorite inks. It goes from a purple-leaning lighter grey in a dry pen to a dark bluish purple with a strong grey component in a wet pen. Both those extremes are beautiful, I think, but in between is it's sweet spot - is it a grey-purple or a purple-grey? - but it's not dark there. I've had a problem getting it to flow in a very dry pen I've just inked with it this morning but I suspect there's a problem with the pen, not the ink, and in other pens it's been great. I suspect you would like this one. (Chopin is another one I love that's similar - compared to Vivaldi it's a grey blue-leaning blurple (or blue-leaning blurple grey?). Handel is a very interesting dusty and nicely shading sort-of rose colored ink that I could see some people calling purple but as a purple-lover I see it more as red. But a wonderful red - I'm not a red-lover but I use this when I want to use a red.)

Thank you for all this information.  It does sound as if we have similar taste in purples.

Lilac Night is not too fussy.  It is one of the anniversary inks in the triangle bottles. I'm a huge fan of Winter Miracle which is a dark purple blue with amazing sheen.  Winter Miracle is not easy to clean out of pens, but I love it and don't care.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Thank you for your advice.  When you say Winter Miracle is not easy to clean, do you meant that it requires a lot of flushing, or that you have to use something stronger than water to flush?

I've liked it so much that it stays inked.  I always flush with warm soapy water (I like how Meyers Lavender smells, so I use that).  On this ink, I've just used the ink, then used another blue ink (gasp), and then finally flushed until I put the pen away.  I know it's not the best way to go about it, but it's easy.  I haven't had a problem after using the second ink because it makes sure the particles get out, but that's not for everyone.  I would suggest just using warm soapy water (many inksters recommend DAWN dishwashing soap) and flush until clear.

Yesterday I finished my bottle of Rohrer & Klingner Scabiosa.  Now I'm scanning my other bottles to decide whether I can finish another one within the next few months.

Troublemaker Milky Ocean.

Good thing I have more...

I also just finished a MB Emerald and I'm torn between opening one of my dwindling stock of 'old' bottles or switching to the new version for a while. They appear identical, but I don't know whether the new one will feel right yet. I guess I have to try it sooner or later.

It's looking like "Sailor - Manyo Nadeshiko" is going to be my first bottle EVER emptied!
Funny...I was a die-hard Green/Brown ink addict before that one came into my life...now it's all I use.
That beautiful Blue that shades to pink and purple is just....everything!
It matches all of my fragrances perfectly and garners so many compliments compared to all my other inks.

I just finished a bottle of Montblanc Royal Blue.  It was nice to my Esterbrooks.

I love the smell of fountain pen ink in the morning.

I just finished my second bottle of Pelikan Edelstein Tanzanite. It is a pleasant, no-nonsense blue/black. It is also the only color of Edelstein ink I have managed to stay with long enough to empty a full bottle (and indeed now two). Some of the other Edelstein inks are nice, too, but they just don't inspire me enough to use them consistently. Maybe Smoky Quartz could become a daily driver, but it is, as far as I know, a special edition ink, so too that will get tough to find, and I don't like it well enough to displace my daily dark brown, Yama-guri.

Another observation: Many folks (including me) seem to be fond of the attractive glass Edelstein bottles. However, they have a major drawback: when they are less than about half-full it becomes extremely difficult (to the point of being impractical) to fill a pen directly from them. The larger the nib, the worse it gets, but even for a fairly modest M400 nib, filling from a half-full (or less) bottle is a chore. It isn't an absolute requirement to immerse the full feed into the ink up to the section (though that is the optimal condition for filling), but one definitely needs to cover the feed capillaries and air channels, of the pen will not fill properly, and that can require a lot of careful juggling during the last fill before one gives up and goes to an eyedropper/syringe/external vessel to fill the pen. Yea, the mouth of the bottle is wide and even a large pen can be inserted at an angle, but that fact doesn't help much, since the curve of the bottom of the  inside of the bottle seems to be ingeniously designed such that no matter the angle one holds the bottle, the ink doesn't cover the feed of a pen any better. Fortunately, I have plenty of eyedroppers and/or Ink Misers handy to compensate, but still, it seems for a retail price that is now 20-ish EUR, the bottle could be a bit more practically designed to both look good AND allow for unaided filling down to a more reasonable level (say a quarter or less, as is possible with the traditional Pelikan bottles, which were designed back in the day, when daily pen filling was a serious and practical matter... :) ).

A couple of other (not Edelstein) bottles in my inventory are nearing empty, so perhaps more news in a few weeks.

What do you do with all this ink to use up so many bottles?  I'm very impressed.

I do a lot of writing. Taking notes during meetings and preparing things on paper before turning to the computer.

I just finished a bottle for the first time ... but by accidentally spilling it. After I picked the bottle off the floor - and after cleaning the floor, chair, my pants, and my beagle puppy's newly violet snout (as a result of the splash, NOT from her trying to lick it up, thank goodness) - there was enough remaining in the bottle for about half a fill.

Does it count?

As a follow-up, I wanted to illustrate what a nib looks like inserted into an Edelstein bottle. The pen shown is a Pelikan M800. The challenges to filling a pen directly from the bottle as the ink level drops even a little bit should be obvious.

What is particularly annoying to me is the curvature of the bottom of the ink vessel that obviates the utility of the wide mouth, so that no matter the angle the pen is inserted, filling the pen is not easier. The bottle designer was even so clever as to put generous radii on the sides of the inside, so even tilting the pen out-of-plane does not help. It is almost as if the bottle was conceived to make filling directly from it distinctly difficult.

This is surprising from a company that has been making writing inks for almost 200 years and has demonstrated it is at least theoretically capable of designing practical ink bottles…

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
