Getting Started From Paris (France)

Recommended Posts

Bonjour / Hello ,

I'm a young french student who wish to learn how to improve his penmanship. I don't really know anything about this art except that looking at some samples here on this forum has a very pleasant effect on my mind. I've decided that I would like to master the Spencerian style and I've just bought on Amazon the books by Mott Media (picture 1). I however have some questions regarding the pen i should use to start. Since I've never used a dip pen in my life, i don't know if it would be better to start the copybooks i've just bought with one (if yes, which one?) or if i should better use a pencil, ballpoint pen, or my fountain pen. I owed a parker fountain pen but i don't know anything about the size of its nibs .. (picture 2)

Would someone be kind enough to answer my questions ? Or to give me the ressources to check for beginners on this topic ?

Have a nice day,

Valentin

Welcome home. Pull up a stump and set a spell. Hopefully someone with knowledge about Spencerian and modern Parkers will be along soon.

Greetings and a warm welcome ! Nice to hear you are improving your handwriting, shows hope for the younger generation to use traditional tools.

Retired, twice. Time to do more things, writing being one.

Greetings and welcome! No better way to begin honing penmanship than with a fountain pen.

...The history, culture and sophistication; the rich, aesthetic beauty; the indulgent, ritualistic sensations of unscrewing the cap and filling from a bottle of ink; the ambient scratch of the ink-stained nib on fine paper; A noble instrument, descendant from a line of ever-refined tools, and the luster of writing,
with a charge from over several millennia of continuing the art of recording man's life.

Welcome !

Use whichever is comfortable for writing. Write slowly, and concentrate on shaping each character as you desire it to appear on paper. Speed will follow, as your control improves. Use the copybooks, but invent opportunities to write -- notes to yourself, shopping lists, letters to friends and family. Write with your pen, rather than email. Write with your pen; scan the letter into your computer; sent the scanned letter by email.

Be patient with yourself. Pour a glass of wine and play music while writing ! Make it enjoyable.

Write with joy.

Greetings and a warm welcome ! Nice to hear you are improving your handwriting, shows hope for the younger generation to use traditional tools.

To answer to Beauport who said "Nice to hear you are improving your handwriting, shows hope for the younger generation to use traditional tools." i want to say the following :

I've realised one day, when my computer crashed during a lecture that i was not able to hold a pen decently anymore. I looked around and saw that nobody was using a pen. It really made me sad. Since then I decided that i've to work on it. Now i'm keeping a personal diary that i fill every evening. And god, I feel so good after dropping all my thoughts on the paper. Writing without a computer or a cellphone but with just the power of your brain for 30 minutes was really hard at the beginning. I made a lot of horrible grammar/spelling mistakes that usually are taken care of by my laptop. I realised that I had a big concentration problem. Now i'm going back to these traditional tools : writing on paper, reading paper books instead of online ebooks and i feel that i'm really improving myself. I'm not saying that computers are bad - proof is I'm using one right now - but just that a lot of people my age have forgotten how to live without ...

This gave me ideas for a future novel I could write :)

Now, as Sasha Royale advised me, I will "pour myself a glass of wine and play music while writing". Probably some songs by John Denver - they are very appropriate for me when I write.

Have a nice day,

Valentin

Hello Valentin. Welcome to FPN, from Cape Town (South Africa).

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
