Hello everyone,

 

I hope you are all doing well :)

 

I have a pen and pencil set that I know literally nothing about. I was wondering if anyone had seen this set before. and if you know any history on the item?

Hi Jamie, welcome to the forum!

 

From what I could find, it's a 777 pencil / 477 pen set from the mid 80's.

The micromatic pencil advances automatically and uses a 5 mm lead.

The set was made in Germany and is 24 K gold plated.

 

It's a very nice set!

Staedtler is a very old company, in Germany, still in business. I recall visiting an historic house in Annapolis, Maryland, and seeing some interesting wooden pencils from the Seventeenth Century, with the name "Staedtler". The name also appears on colored pencils and liquid ink markers at Wal-Mart stores. Obviously, they make ballpoint pens and mechanical pencils. Drafting tools ?

 

Does anyone know if Staedtler ever made a fountain pen ?

 

So, Jamie, what do you use for daily writing ?

Yes, they actually do at the moment. Currently they have an expensive range of pens: 'The Princeps' range and apparently an 'Eminence' range.

I do not know whether they have been making fountain pens in the past

Thank you for the the information, and quick reply!

 

I've actually been emailed by a chap from Germany who has said that the the micromatic pencil (777 75) and pens (477 75) were in the assortment for a very short time only (in 1986) and that he found the pencil in an old Staedtler catalogue. He said they were not sold to the UK market, so how it ended up in the welsh valleys I'll never know. Not sure how accurate he is, but I've attached the image he sent me.

 

I was given the pen set as a gift, and never thought they were 30 years old. Very interesting finding out about them.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off.
