Omas 360 Mezzo, Broken.... Tears.... Sobbing.

Good evening everyone. I need your help!

I've just bought a new (old stock) Omas 360 Mezzo fountain pen. The bricks and mortar store where I bought it is not the best. They often display high quality pens with misaligned tines or cracked barrels etc. As there are only two independent pen retailers here, I proceed with caution whenever I reluctantly buy from this particular one.

The 360 I looked at today appeared perfect. The nib was dreamy and there were no visible flaws on the pen. They allowed me to dip test it and all appeared fine.

I have just got home and attempted to insert a short international cartridge. The pen keeps "springing" open with the cartridge in place and now, when I pull off the cap, the body opens up and I have to hold the "innards" to pull off the cap. The barrel knob, when closed, doesn't lock the body to the section as it should. The knob also unscrews all the way and comes off. I'm not sure it should.

I've googled for an hour and I can't find any disassembly videos or advice as to what the problem might be.

I'm on my own with this one. The shop won't give me a refund as consumer rights here are non existent. Omas is no more. I am a long way from any pen repair specialists, so all in all, I'm gutted.

Any ideas? Anyone?

sorry to hear about it...

I think due to Dubai heat the glue, attaching the section to the barrel might have snapped...an image of the edges (section end and barrel end would help)...

or could it be that it broke at that point can't tell without picture...

There is no glue, or broken joint. I think it is something to do with the internal workings of the locking mechanism. But thank you for your suggestion.

Fully closed. Which it will only do without a cartridge, and even then, it won't stay closed.

Such a bummer... that's a gorgeous pen!

Nibs.com / John Mottishaw in California might be worth contacting, he was an Omas dealer and seems to be one of the most knowledgeable in regard to Omas issues and repair.

David-

So many restoration projects...

I am still curious what would be the remedy. As it seems difficult to try to disassemble an regular Omas 360 piston, I considered getting a Mezzo with the converter, but not if the above is a common problem.

from a picture i found on the internet, it seems that the section with cartridge holder screws into the barrel.

The only problem i see now is how to "unscrew"  it fomr the barrel, as it is all plastics.

So the question is now.... how to weaken the glue layer so it can be unscrewed without breaking the mechanics.

I thought about heat but that seems not to work. Acetone maybe ?

Thanks for the info (I only used B&W film and learned to process that).   Boy -- the stuff I learn here!  Just continually astounded at the depth and breadth of knowledge in this community! Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

It just wasn't likely to have been Kodachrome.  It would have been the films I referred to as "other color films." (Kodachrome is not a generic term for color film. It is a specific film that produces transparencies, or slides, by a process not used for any other film. There are other color trans

@Ceilidh -- Well, I knew people who were photography majors in college, and I'm pretty sure that at least some of them were doing photos in color, not just B&W like I learned to process.  Whether they were doing the processing of the film themselves in one of the darkrooms, or sending their stuff out to be processed commercially?  That I don't actually know, but had always assumed that they were processing their own film. Kodachrome 25 was the most accurate film for clinical photography and was used by dermatologists everywhere. I got magnificent results with a Nikon F2 and a MicroNikkor 60 mm lens, using a manually calibrated small flash on a bracket. I wish there were a filter called "Kodachrome 25 color balance" on my iPhone camera.
