Interchangable Nibs (On A Doric)

Recommended Posts

I have a Doric ringtop arriving today: junior-size, named "Tootie". The pen looks in nice shape but the nib is described as a bit of a mess. Of course I'd like an Adjustable nib (a #3 to #5), but what else would fit in such an instrument?

As far as I know, Original Doric nibs came in flexible, manifold or adjustable. The adjustable has the size listed. The others may not, depending on the year of manufacture. The size for a non-adjustable nib for a junior is size 2, as far as I know.

Many later Wahl Eversharp nibs will fit a Doric if it didn't have an adjustable nib to begin with. In fact, I've read that it was standard policy at W-E to replace nibs with whatever was on hand, not necessarily a 'proper' Doric nib.

If your doric had an adjustable nib, I've heard it can be more problematic to switch nibs, as the shape of the feed and section are different.

Good Luck!

Update: I bought one on eBay (a #5 with a Medium point), set it on a W-E feed I had in the house and had Mr. Minuskin grind it to a Fine. It sounds like a hell of a kluge when I describe this, but others show the same symptoms. Anyway, I've got my fingers crossed that it'll be a fantastic drawing pen.

Update: the pen was returned with a beautifully pointed nib - a calligrapher's wet dream. Unfortunately, it doesn't work for me. I'm not a calligrapher and this nib needs a heavier hand than I have to get all the nib's qualities onto paper.

I'll have to sell it on and start over. I bought a lot of old, filthy pens the other day because one of them, though barely recognizable, was a Doric with a Flexible nib. Fingers crossed.

Update: I may have gotten lucky. The nib on the Doric is a #2 with a great deal of flex. And I haven't mentioned the third Doric ringtop.

It's totally a sickness.

@Ruaidhri This was an absolutely wonderful bit of writing, and I hope that you're able to maintain the style once all of the medications are out of your system.  Take care and recover quickly!

These comments make me sad as I sympathise with Ruaidhri, having great difficulties in being taken seriously. Or being taken at all (no off-colors jokes, please!) In spite of overwhelming odds,  Ruaidhri -now I know how to spell it- made a courageous decision and stuck to it. I was diagnosed with a similar growth in a place I will not reveal. Oh, well, if you insist it was Mount Sinai Hospital. But I firmly intend to walk in Ruaidhri's footsteps, if he will let me, on my next visit to Dublin.

Reminds me of the day my associates and I developed a cure for all mankind's ills and mistakenly wrote it down with invisible ink.

Was that the end of the Laboratory? Somehow the exactitude created a fully destructive device, as always!
