Hello From Socal

Hi everyone,

I just joined FPN.

Wanted to introduce myself.

I am Landscape Architect and enjoy writing and drawing with fp.

My first fp I got almost 30 years ago was Rotring calligraphy pen with fine nib. Loved drawing with that pen all day. I even got extra fine nib later.

Then I got 2 fps around the same time in 1993 that I still have.

One is Montblanc 144 with fine nib from my wife. I use MB burgundy red ink in it for plan checking.

The other one is also Montblanc but 149 with medium nib. This is a special one for me because my father who has been a journalist for over 40 years handed this fp over to me. It's from around 1972. Still writes smoothly and I love it. Using MB jazz blue ink in it.

Recently I purchased Aurora Mare fp with medium nib on ebay.

I have not received it yet, but it is one of the pens I always wanted.

It is pretty exciting.

It is great to be able to join such a wonderful network!

Dream, take one step at a time and achieve. :)

Welcome !

Two very different fountain pens. The 144 is far more portable. The 149 is huge. Which do you like better ?

Auf freiem Grund mit freiem Volke stehn.
Zum Augenblicke dürft ich sagen:
Verweile doch, du bist so schön !

I love the 149 when I can freely write on a notebook or a letter. I don't get tired from holding it for long hours. It doesn't fit well in my pocket though because of its large size.

I usually use this only on my desk at home.

On the other hand, 144 is great for writing in limited space such as redlining drawings which I do all the time (MB's burgundy red ink is very good for this purpose, not too aggresively red), It is easy to handle and move the pen around in my palm. I carry this pen with me almost all the time. It is a very good travel pen. One thing about this pen though is that it is a tad short unposted for me.

Dream, take one step at a time and achieve. :)

Greetings!

:W2FPN:

...The history, culture and sophistication; the rich, aesthetic beauty; the indulgent, ritualistic sensations of unscrewing the cap and filling from a bottle of ink; the ambient scratch of the ink-stained nib on fine paper; A noble instrument, descendant from a line of ever-refined tools, and the luster of writing,
with a charge from over several millennia of continuing the art of recording man's life.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
