L'artisan Pastellier Encre Classique Brun Ours

"Brun ours" means brown bear. This is a grey brown which reminds me of R&K Sepia (but I don't have it with me to compare).

The ink is medium saturated, watery but not lubricating. Nice shading.

Yea, I like it, also. Thanks.

Hmmm. I may have to try this one, and see how close it is some vintage Skrip Brown (red box) that said "sepia" on some sides of the box. Unfortunately, the bottle leaked (and it was one of the good glass Skrip bottle with the built in inkwell in the top :crybaby:). So I've been trying to find a close match for the color.

I keep doing this.... :headsmack: I find some ink that looks interesting and then try to find a modern ink to match as best as I can.

Thanks for the review.... And not....

Nice one - I'm into "shades of grey" at the moment, and this grey-brown fits right in. Also... I really like the Callifolio line of L'Artisan Pastellier, and it might be worth it to take a closer look at their Encres Classiques.

Who wouldn't give an ink a chance with such a wonderful name?

I did & was glad I did, a wonderful brown, without red; altho I like those as well, I enjoy the cooler browns @ times.

  • 2 weeks later...

I was sent a small sample vile of this ink with the Pelikan Marbled Brown EF that I ordered.

It does look sort of R&K sepia or cuttle fish sepia-ish.

EF is not a nib for a a shading ink. I'll have to put that in an M or even a B to see what it will do on fairly good paper.

Happened to find a sheet of M&K 95 typing paper...sized on one side only, and there was a slight bit of shading with the EF nib.

(Any of the three M&K papers are the only Brunner paper worth buying)

Wait a minute.

I have this ink!

I can't believe I forgot that I bought it a while back. I haven't inked a pen with it yet, because I've been doing online classes lately, so I'd forgotten it!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
