Hello From Dublin

Hello. This is all rather addictive, isn't it?

So, like most people of my age and background (mid thirties, UK) I guess I hadn't written with a fountain pen since I finished secondary school at 16. Going to sixth form and university and discovering that not only did people not care about how you wrote, but that writing itself was optional, was somewhat revelatory. And then 20 years later, you're reduced to scrawling with ballpoints and find yourself ashamed at your handwriting.

Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but I'm getting married next month and we're having a humanist ceremony. As part of the ceremony, we write each other a letter expressing why we love each other, why we got together and how we make each other feel. These letters are sealed into a box with a nice bottle of wine and opened on our 5th anniversary, or sooner if we think we want to throw the towel in. A black bic ballpoint and some A4 lined paper torn from an office notepad was never going to cut it.

I did some research, went to a great shop and walked away with a lamy safari and some G. Lalo vergé de France paper and envelopes. And I haven't stopped writing since! But it's not enough. It just feels so good. And I can feel an addiction starting. In fact, I've already ordered a second pen.

That's me and that's my story, so hi. And without knowing any of you, or interacting with any of you, I feel you're all partly to blame for feeding my burgeoning addiction. Thanks!

Greetings and a warm welcome ! Occasions for writing such as your lovely story can be a trigger for many to seek out a fountain pen and good paper, from there, well, anything goes.

Retired, twice. Time to do more things, writing being one.

Welcome !

What kind of wine ?

I recommend a Riesling Außlese. It is a nice sweet, fruity white, that ages very well.

It would give me a reason to look forward to five years.

Probably a pinot noir I think. Which would give me more reason to look forward five years. Better yet, a scotch but I already know that'll be kiboshed 😐

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
