Hello From Pittsburgh

Hello all!

I am a first year graduate student at the University of Pittsburgh studying Molecular Biophysics and Structural Biology. I'm relatively new to fountain pens, though I have fallen madly in love with them.

My collection currently consists of six pens:

* Cross Bailey in red (medium nib)

* Cross Calais in blue (medium nib)

* Pilot Metropolitan in silver (fine nib)

* Sheaffer unknown model (medium nib) - My father gave me this one. He said he got it when he was in high school over 40 years ago.

* Two unknown brands that my fiancee's mother gave me for Christmas

I want to get more into this hobby, even with it being somewhat cost-intensive for a graduate student. I'm not sure what else there is to say. I hope to be a helpful member of the community and do what I can to promote the use of fountain pens within the sciences!

All the best,

Stephen

P.S. I had to stop myself from spending $126 on a Pilot Vanishing Point last night. Excellent deal, but I don't need to spend that right now... especially since I'm holding out for the annual edition.

Welcome to our little corner of the universe from a pen user in San Diego. There are some very good and inexpensive pens coming out of China with one clear standout in the Kaigelu 316. I was able to figure out what the pen my father gave me was! It's a Sheaffer NoNonesense in black. It writes the smoothest of all of my pens so far. Not the most expensive pen out there, but still a good one that has variations in production still today.

Howdy from another Pittsburgher! :W2FPN:

If you had posted a couple of days sooner.... You just missed the monthly Steel City Nibs meeting. It's generally the third Wednesday of the month (although this month it got pushed back to the 25th). We meet at the Panera Bread over in Bakery Square (diagonally across the parking lot from the Google offices). Hopefully Josh will post when the February meeting is going to be (look for posts in the "Clubs, Meetings and Events" Forum (I'll keep watching and then try to remember to PM you about the next meeting).

Thank you all for the warm welcome! I hope to find a good home with a lot of enablers who will test my self-control.

Ruth, I will do my best to make it to the next meeting! Wednesdays are one of my lighter days during the week. I will keep an eye out for the meeting announcements, and I look forward to meeting everyone in the local community!

Welcome, Stephen !

Glorious that you have heirloom fountain pens. Keep them in service. They are loaded with memories. Pilot Vanishing Points will be around for a long time, so you will surely get yours.

(Although "need" :lticaptd:has nothing to do with fountain pens.)

Welcome to FPN from a WV guy to the west. Wish the Pgh group didn't meet in the city proper - tad too far for a weekday for me. I did my first year at Pitt but did terribly there. Turns out Oakland isn't for a guy that grew up in a 1,400 acre state park! Enjoy the hobby - lots to learn here.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
