Nice shading. But, well, it's orange.... So I'll pass.

Thanks for the review, though (every now and then MB comes out with one that makes you think "Why is this NOT in their regular lineup?"; Leo Tolstoy was one of those and I was able to snag a bottle before the ink went away entirely...).

Dromgoole's site says they have 133 bottles of Leo Tolstoy.

Not popular in Texas?

It feels great even in finer nibs, here's a fast photo (bad quality I might add) that shows the ink on Maruman paper. The pen used to write this was Graf von Faber-castell Guilloche with fine nib.

AlsoI'm rather surprised by this ink behavior - it produces crazy nib crud. I haven't used this pen (Faber-Castell Ambition) for four days - that's what I discovered today after uncapping it:

That's rather disturbing. No big deal, some will say. Probably they're right =- you just clean the pen and write. For me however it's a sign that ink quality wasn't on the first place while introducing this one. Nib cruds can be very nice and it would be even nice idea to create family album of "blooming" inks :) On the other hand that's behavior I would expect from cheapest inks and not from premium product (and Montblanc is premium).

I haven't had the opportunity to try Montblanc Lucky Orange. I must try and find a sample so that I can see what it's like at home. :) I'm not certain enough that I want a whole bottle, but even if I did, I haven't found one yet.

I suspect this is the problem of a certain kind of yellow dye. Several yellow, orange and bright green inks do this.

Also the conclusion I've come to.

Even without the crud growth don't think this was an orange for me, but thanks, as ever, for the review, visvamitra.

I also get nib crud from Montblanc Toffee Brown. This LE Orange is interesting, but I'll stick with Noodlers Apache Sunset and Diamine Autumn Oak as my go to orange range inks. I do, however, love these little square Monblanc bottles. Perfect size and shape IMHO. Thank you for the review.

I agree, the MB square bottles are fantastic. Thanks for the review!

Drat, this looks like my kind of orange. Ink of Joy was also a bright orange and it didn't fade which made me very happy. I wonder if this is the same. Thanks for the great review.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Agree, I have come to "expect" some amount of crud on my yellow/orange inks. ;)

Some of my pens thou, they seemed to be very "crud" resistant... Ex. my Oversized Dolcevita is extremely resistant to develop crud (Guessing a superb closing/sealed mechanism).. I have it loaded with orange inks 100% of the time. The last 2-3 months it had, Kin Mokusei, Fresh Oranges, KWZI Monarch, Robert Oster Orange Zest and is currently with Robert Oster NG Special... no crud at all with any of them... :D

I would believe (rightly or wrongly) that crud meant is was doing something bad to the pen and then I'd be scared to use it in my more expensive piston fillers. I thought this might be a nice substitute for expensive and hard to get kobe tarumi apricot, but now not so sure...

I've only encounted nib crud on one pen only, and that was a vintage Waterman that doesn't seal well (inks tend to evaporate in this pen). I think my others pen all seal pretty well, so it's more difficult for the yellow dye to dry out on the nib.

I find the same is true for my Delta DV, Oversized; it has never had anything BUT orange inks & yet my Edison Collier seems to be a "magnet" for nib crud. I must believe the number of orange inks I have run thru the Delta, would have sometimes shown effect, while I have noticed it a few times with the Collier. It is not restricted to the Collier however because I recently discovered a MB 146 quite "growthy" from a fill of Diamine's Olive Green, "POGI," the ink made for the Philippines. I gave it a good swipe a week or so ago & have seen no evidence since. I did freak out when I first saw it a few years ago, but after reading posts here, realised it's benign nature & merely swipe & "go on."

You should take the opportunity to try some "JOY," if ever possible; it is a very fine Orange, similar to MB's Gandhi, but different enough to be glad of having both.

  • 1 month later...

Visvamtra thanks for the crud warning.

It can be the only orange I have is some early '90's Pelikan cartridges and the new Lamy Orange cartridges. (Forgot Apache Sunset)

Something always happened, that prevented me from getting the Herbin.

My bottle is darker, not neon at all. Don't mind that.

Don't shade as much as I hoped.

Next week I'll be getting some Kaweco Orange cartridges when I go to my B&M.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
