The third of the 2016 Commonwealth Pen Show Noodler's special, limited edition inks. This one is another waterproof ink, well nearly so, with just a little smearing. Similar to BB Espresso or Sailor Doyou in being a very dark brown, a rich earth color. In the images I couldn't get the brown, the contrast was too much and the camera just took it as black. But it's not black! It's deep brown. Trust me.

 

The especially wonderful thing about this ink is DOES NOT wash red. It washes brown, like Parker Penman Mocha.

 

Unfortunately, another unobtanium ink. There may be a few bottles left at GoldSpot, or perhaps not. If any are available, once gone, will be gone forever as the ink was made with a unique dye that Noodler's can't get. Since I received a generous sample I won't need a bottle. But I'd love to have an ink this color, regularly available, that washed brown like this, and was a cool brown.

 

Things like this will get me attending the 2017 Commonwealth Pen Show.

 

Pen: Edison Premiere (M-steel)

Papers: MvL=Mohawk via Linen, TR=Tomoe River, Hij=Hammermill 28 lb inkjet, Rhodia=Rhodia 90g ivory.

Camera: iPhone 7

Waterproof. Just a tiny amount of ink washes away, and none lifts.

In the little halo areas where you see a light red, while drying that at first had an orange and a yellow. Very unique.

This one is one of my favorites and I'm not usually a fan of brown inks. If you get a chance, check this out under black light. The washes I did with this ink were spooky. I love it. I also really like that it is not RED.

Really nice review, whie_lotus! I'm surprised this didn't generate more discussion.

 

An interesting ink... I'm going to try it.

 

Goldspot says they do still have this in stock.

OH, LG, wait, it's not a boring black. You need a UV light. Then it is a amazing and magical. Also, do some washes with it and then look at it in black light. It's super spooky.

I'm going to light it into the sample vial and see whether there's anything.

 

In the video on the pen show inks, the fluorescence only shows up along the thin bleedy edges of a line or wash, not in the middle brown-black part.

 

If USPS tracking is right, I'll be able to test this tomorrow.

I finally see it when I put some on a paper towel. However, it's not visible at all with writing on paper (washed or not).

 

[Edit: Oh I got it with crappy paper (a Muji notebook). So this is the first ink that actually works better with crappy paper?]

@ amberleadavis -- Sadly the scan of your artwork doesn't fluoresce on my laptop screen :( -- I tried....

@BradGad -- where did you find it? And did your source happen to also have a bottle of Suffregist Carmine? I would have liked to have gotten a bottle of it, but I didn't make the Commonwealth Show last fall (I did make it the year before and have the 3 LE Noodler's inks from then).

Ruth, I don't think the fluorescent thing (the light? the wavelength?) can be picked up by photos and scans and transmitted digitally. I'm afraid you have to literally see it with your own eyes.

Suddenly this ink gets much more interesting (bordering on the level of having to get a bottle). As I was looking at everything around me with the UV light I noticed Miles Standish Blue is somewhat fluorescent as well.

 

 

I actually loved it once I got to doing the washes and seeing it with the UV light. All three of the 2016 inks have some UV reaction.

I just ordered a bottle from them. They also had MB Pink cartridges. I missed out on the bottles.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off.
