I've never heard of Sphinx before, but its sleek lines just grabbed me at the show. Here's "before" right as I attempted to check the damage.

I decided this would be a great first attempt. Went off like a charm. Here's some afters.

And to clarify, I am giving it as a gift tomorrow to my girlfriend.

Well done you. :) It feels good when you've done that first one and taken your first steps towards doing some straight forward repairs doesn't it? ;)

Congratulations, eharriett! A lot of satisfaction comes with being able to restore and tune your own pens. Makes you much less nervous about buying vintage pens and pens with finicky nibs. Well done.

GOOD FOR YOU, EHARRIET! CONGRATULATIONS! :D

Bask in the glow. :) I haven't tried the vintage route yet, but I hope I'm just as successful.

Well done... enjoy,

Anthony

That sounds like a satisfying piece of work -- nice job! Handsome pen and nicely machined threads for the cap.

Sure does!! And my first Esterbrook J was just completed as well. I've got some sac glue drying on a section tonight for a Sheaffer Lifetime Flattop I can't wait to ink up and try. Getting the hang of sac swapping. I have to read up and watch some vids on nib work. Haven't touched any nibs but I really need to learn. one thing at time.

Just so exciting! It feels absolutely great bringing back something from the past and making it useable again for future generations to enjoy.

Warning. You have been lucky, so far. Be VERY VERY careful pulling the section from the barrel. The tight/stuck ones are where the greatest chance of damage is. I have a few damaged/destroyed pens in my AW SH!T box.

Thanks for the warning. I am being as careful as my little amateur hands can possibly be.

Congratulations! I felt a huge satisfaction from my first pen repair, and now I'm getting a bit more interested in it. I hope the same happens for you.

And thank you for bringing a little piece of history back to life!

Congratulations.

I admire your adventuresome attitude in tackling any sort of restoration. I've still to change my first Esterbrook sac

Ditto here. Stuff keeps coming up. I have the pens, I have the sacs. I have the sac spreaders, and the talc and the shellac and -- IIRC -- a small container of rosin. I even have a couple of j-bars, just in case.

It's a matter of spending the time reading up and then actually getting up the nerve to open the pens up.

The pen, BTW, looks like a Sheaffer Balance but with a nib like a Parker 45. I'd be interested if anyone had more info about the brand.

I know exactly how you feel. When I put my first new bladder in a pen, I felt somehow that I had arrived...

A tiny word of advice. Despite the cautions about soaking ruining celluloid and so on, I have always soaked my pens before trying to open them, and my reward has been that I have only very seldom broken the section or barrel. Shellac is supposed to loosen with heat, but it also seems to partly dissolve in warm water.

Your next step is is become a brilliant but erratic Nibmeister, complete with secret rituals and hidden, carefully guarded techniques that we share ONLY with the members of our Guild... vae vulgum pecus!

Congratulations and welcome to the slippery slope of pen repair.

Pause to enjoy the satisfaction of taking something that did not work and probably hasn't worked for decades and you (YOU) made it whole and functional again. It is a wonderful feeling.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
