Shaffer Skrip Red To Be Discontinued

One last time from me on this subject: the ink in the most recent bottle of Sheaffer Skrip Red that I bought is not the same as the Sheaffer Skrip Red in each of the previous bottles I bought. In the past—and specifically referring to the ink in those earlier bottles—I described Sheaffer Skrip Red as "Christmas red" and "emergency red" and "red-letter-date red" and "red red." None of those appellations applies to the ink in the bottle I now have. I would describe it as Mercurochrome red. And for those not old enough to remember Mercurochrome I would describe it thus: on the border between orange-ish red and red-ish orange. My Waterman Red is closer to "Christmas red" than my Sheaffer Skrip Red. And that is one sad state of affairs.

I love the smell of fountain pen ink in the morning.

This is my LAST ATTEMPT to address this as well, but MY EXPERIENCE WITH MY NEW BOTTLE OF SHEAFFER RED IS THE SAME AS YOUR'S BOOKMAN.

I SWEAR THEY HAVE CHANGED THE FORMULA. The "Christmas Red" dye probably costs too much to source... or is no longer available for "environmental reasons." :(

I've moved on to other reds since reading about this...

Hi TS,

I know what you mean... I feel like breaking into song: "I Want a New Red!"; sung to the beat of Huey Lewis' "I Want a New Drug." :D

Any suggestions? Maybe Diamine has something?

I've been using Ying Xiong 201 red (I think this is manufactured by Hero) and it's actually pretty good. It's red-red, much like the Slovenian Sheaffer stuff. If you can get past the barfy chemical odor (it stinks of sweetened dish soap, pretty much like the 2 other Hero inks I own, the 232 BB and the 233 Blue).

Just curious - not that I absolutely want to revive this thread - do newer Sheaffer Red bottles (the ones with a different color) still have the Bic name on the bottle? Do they mention Cross?

Hi Dan,

Great question, but...what I got SHOULD be the good stuff...

C. XXIX, (2009), Sheaffer Co., Division of Bic. Made in Slovenia.

 Maybe Bookman, myself and the others complaining here got a bad batch of the stuff? I got mine from StreetFair on e-bay, (and I've never had any trouble from them before or since).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
