Hello all! I am new here but I have been lurking for quite some time trying to gather as much information as I could about pens and ink! I am a nun from the US so I don't have a lot of money to spend on pens, but I do love the art and the beauty that is found in the fountain pen world! I am looking for a workhorse pen, something I am use at work as a nurse, and something for personal writing. I was looking at the lamy safari dark lilac and the twsbi eco... I am a huge fan of anything purple ( you know that lovely shade of blue purple!) What is a good work purple ( dark enough to use at work but rebellious enough to be purple ) and a good journaling purple? ( I have to admit I am intrigued by the diamond shimmertastic lilac satin but I don't want any clogging or pen problems! I am so grateful to this community for the resource and inspiration you are and have been to me! Be back soon!

A nun of which faith?

As for a pen, what about a Purple Lamy Safari

With an iron gall (permanent) ink?

I am NOT a purple ink person, but have gotten a couple of samples that so intrigued me, I kept them. First would be De Atramentis Aubergine for your work purple. Beautifully-behaved ink. For the others...I'd have to go upstairs and look. ;)

From long experience, I'd steer clear of shimmer inks used in any pen that cost more than $5.

Welcome aboard.

Welcome !

I am drawn back to my school days, working at the town Daiy Queen. The nuns, who taught at the local school, would patronize my store. I got to know all of them by face and name.

Yes, people, nuns have faces ! :lticaptd: Those were wonderful days, when changes were coming to their habits.

I cannot speak to the fountain pen utility for nuns, but for nurses, I have had some experience. I think your choice of LAMY Safari is excellent. It is a very reliable, and rugged pen. The nib is easily exchanged for several sizes from LAMY. The ABS plactic body is strong and easy to clean, or disinfect. ABS plastic stands up well to hospital disinfectant wipes, and swabbing with isopropol alcohol. I would recommend, and have given, any color but white. White things disappear in the trash and linen.

The transparent / clear version of the Safari is called "Vista". I have one, that has been through an archeological dig, Peace Corps, terrier chewing, and a winter in the flower bed. Though frightfully ugly,it still writes well.

Write with joy.

Greetings from Pittsburgh! :W2FPN:

Scabiosa is well behaved, but I find that sometimes it oxidizes a bit light. That may be an issue if you are having to fill out hospital charts.
Have a look at KWZI Grey Plum, which is super dark but still purple (and has some water resistance). Also (if you're brave) try Noodler's Kung Te Cheng -- it's not the best behaved ink out there (it gets cloggy and there is bad nib creep issues with it) but it's the most permanent ink I can think of that fits your needs -- I've often thought that you could burn a piece of paper written with KTC and the ink would hang in the air after the paper is gone.... It's waterproof, UV resistant, and a gorgeous indigo blue violet color, but you may need to flush your pen more often.

For other purple inks, have a look at the pinned Index to the Ink Review Forum.

Greetings Sister. :W2FPN: I would highly recommend R&K Scabiosa, which happens to be in one of my pens most of the time. As said, it is a dusty purple iron gall ink, formulated for fountain pens. This ink "shades" beautifully.

By shading I mean that the ink's colour tends to pool (become darker) often at the end of a stroke.

Below is an example of shading with a blue/black ink.

Hello and welcome! Fountain pens and letter writing go hand in hand to me, and the person I write the most is my Great Aunt, a sister at St Scholastica Convent in St. Cloud, MN.

I can't speak to a dark general writing purple, but J Herbin "Poussiere de Lune" is one I use in my journal quite regularly.
