Some Blues I Am Considering

I have about 60+ samples of various colors on my kitchen table right now. I have undertaken a project of finding perfect "writing" colors for me. So far, the only perfect color I've settled on is Blue Black (Noodler's Army Aircorp Blue-Black -- dark, neat, and dries with a greenish tint -- exactly what I wanted). I'm getting closer on a teal and my green. But the blue I thought I had settled. And, of course, my ideal blue would be the pen-staining BSB. I love the vibrancy of the color and the tint of purple. But I don't like the fact that I can't throw in literally any pen I have. So I found some others that are traditional blues. They're the supposed "boring" companies: Parker, Sheaffer, and Waterman. But they've come the closest to what I want in a blue. I wrote down the first 2 paragraphs of the Gettysburg Address with them tonight with a dip pen to test them further for a comparison and I wanted to share. I thought on first glance the Parker was closest to BSB, but it faded when it dried (forgive the stain -- dip pen), so it won't be what I want. The other two have a similar shade to the blue that I like, but they do not have the vibrancy that BSB has. I might settle on BSB and maybe have a second blue. But I was hoping to keep things simple: one bottle for each color that I may want to use.

Liberty's Elysium is the closest blue I've found to BSB personally. Not quite as vibrant, but vibrant nonetheless.

Agreed. I use both LIberty's Elysium and BSB. I have a Sheaffer Admiral dedicated to BSB.

I have a sample of that too. I will do a comparison this evening. My first test did not give me an exciting result, but I'll recheck.

I don't use BSB, but looking at your samples, what about J. Herbin Eclat de Saphir or Diamine Blue Velvet? I prefer EdS personally, but the Blue Velvet might be closer to BSB. I think the EdS is a bit lighter than you might be looking for, but IMO, it really has something nice.

Visconti Blue

Noodler's Liberty's Elysium

Iroshizuku Asa Gao

Diamine ASA Blue

Pelikan 4001 Royal Blue

Depending on your paper, these show reasonable amounts of 'pop', shading and sheening.

The Pelikan and Diamine would be the 'safest' of these inks, meaning that you could put them into any pen without worrying. The others are all fairly saturated and need, not a lot, but a moderate amount of care.

Look through the Reviews section to get an idea of what these inks look like.

Keep in mind that the color and vibrancy of any ink you use is going to be significantly impacted by the wetness and width of the line your pen puts down. An ink you like or dislike in an extra fine or fine nib maybe completely opposite to your eye in a medium or broad nib.

Of the samples in the original post, the Quink Blue and the Skrip Blue are the quickest to fade under sunlight or fluorescent-tube lighting. Pelikan 4001 blue is also vulnerable that way.

Maybe this will help. This is from the 2013 fade test.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

For a great performing blue, may I suggest Noodler's Blue or Noodler's Eel Blue.

Thank you Amberlea, a beautiful spread of samples!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
