Levenger And Rhodia Parted Ways And I'm Not Happy

So, apparently, "some time ago" Levenger stopped making Rhodia refills for their Circa noteobooks.

Okay. Before I plunk down $30 on refills, is the paper they are using now tolerable? The young lady with the drawl ten times more sugary than mine said it was smoother than rhodia but a little thainer (thinner).

Just wondering if I'd be better off finding my own paper and punching it.

I have a fair amount of the Rhodia Levenger paper. To me it's not as smooth as regular Rhodia, so I don't use it much. I have no idea what the regular Levenger papers are like. This might be a good place to ask if anyone has experience with the Staples ARC papers as well.

Thanks for the input. I've tried the Staples ARC and the Office Depot Tul. Both are good enough for "throw away" writing, i.e. rough drafts and such, but I'd rather not use them in my journal. I'll be using this as sort of a mash-up of Circa Agenda and Bullet Journal so I'd like the quality of Rhodia. I guess I'll get the Levenger paper and hope for the best. Current sale will, at least, cover shipping.

I've found that the fountain pen friendliness of their journals, notebooks and note cards has changed through the years from order to order. I don't find them consistant. I like many of their other products, but don't trust their paper.

Thank, much. I won't hold my breath. If it doesn't work out, I'll figure out something else and reserve the Circa paper for less strenuous work. Not sure what I would use in its stead but...

I wish that Levenger had given people a heads-up that they were discontinuing the only good FP paper for their Circa notebooks. I don't mind printing my own lines on 8.5x11" AA paper, but losing the smaller sizes is a pain.

Hi Jeffery!

For sure. Trying to get that cut in local shops is not cheap and doing it yourself is very time consuming.

That is the problem with levenger paper products. I've been buying from them for close to 30 years. It never seems to change. You buy a journal, then maybe a leather cover for it, and all the matching 'do dads' to go with it. Now you're committed. Then you go to order refills, or new note cards, and it's not the same quality.

I love their true writer pens, the leather products are top quality. In general they do a lot right. They just need to fire the paper guy and get someone who understands fountain pens.

Would be nice if they read FPN..lol..

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
