Ohio Pen Show! First Show! Got My Grail Pen First Time Out

Right out of the gate, went to the Ohio Pen Show, my very first pen show, and I found my grail pen: a Waterman 100 Year in red. On top of that, it had the box and a pencil (which I didn't even know about). And at a great price!

Had a BLAST! And now I wanna go to bigger shows and get more! But I just had to share my new baby with everyone.

Now, need to find my next grail pen.....

Congratulations on the new acquisition! I also got a pen I've wanted for a while, although it wasn't *quite* a grail -- just something that had been eluding me for a couple of years (every time I thought I had one pretty much in my grasp something would happen... mostly more interesting pens B)). It's a first generation Emerald Pearl Vacumatic, and it's a bit unusual in that it's got a striped section that matches the rest of the barrel and cap (as well as the striped cap jewel).

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Congratulations! But be careful with it. 100 Years can be a bit fragile, in spite of the name.

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

Very good but if you bought the pen how come you did not know about the pencil and box.

I think the OP meant that having the box was a bonus (since they were just looking for the FP) and it had a Pencil (which they didn't know was made).

Not that one: unless I'm wrong that's a Lucite set and, if so, as strong as, say, a Parker 51. It is the later celluloid models which are prone to degradation.

Yes. I was on the fence about the pen, since there were several vendors offering it and all I wanted was the pen. But then one vendor had this one in a lovely red and it came with a pencil and the box for the same price and I just had to go for it. I knew it wasn't a 1st year, which disappointed me a bit. But it was still awesome.

This is true. Although the end has been restored by a prior owner. It has no cracks and is as intact as this pen is going to be. That part that degrades is already replaced (the end) and the rest is in fine shape. Won't be using it as an everyday beater pen, for sure, but it will hold up to normal everyday writing.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
