Akkerman Ink Bottles

There are some dealers who sell empty ink bottles from time to time, and I have bought more than a few! This morning, I had this thought: ---- "I have never seen an empty Akkerman bottle for sale!" Have you?

No, and I believe it would quite unlikely. Most owners of empty Akkerman bottles will use them to store other inks that come in less easily used bottles, e.g., J. Herbin.

That might have been me. I wasn't selling them, I was trading them.

There are, to my knowledge, three sizes of Akkerman ink bottles. They had a special edition of large 150ml bottles that long ago sold out and are extremely rare. I have tried to find one without luck. I contacted the company in the Nederlands but they said they have none and could not recommend a dealer or source. They do sell on line their standard large range of 60ml bottles that look like the old 150ml in shape. There is a new series of 120ml bottles called Dutch Masters that are shaped more like an Erlenmeyer flask. The range on the 120ml is more limited than the 60ml, I have a favourite search saved on EBAY for the Akkerman bottles but have never had a hit. The structure of the bottles with the ball in the neck captures ink at the top making them ideal for dip or glass pens.

"Once upon a time," both Vanness & Anderson Pens sold their empties, but after awhile I no longer see them offered.

Has anyone experimented with taking the Japanese soda bottles that deal with a marble and converting them for ink use? They have a very similar mechanism up top.

Don't think it would work the same as when you "open" or push the marble down to drink from the bottle, there is about 1cm of open space on each side where the marble rests on the pinched part of the bottle's neck. The open space is to let soda pass by the marble so you can drink the soda. In addition, the is no way to seal the bottle once the marble has been released. The marble is originally held in place and seals the bottle from the pressure of the carbonation holding it against the gasket at the opening. No pressure, no seal.

Akkerman's marble actually seals the neck area where it rests to keep the ink above it for pen filling. You have to tilt the bottle slightly to let ink pass by the marble. Plus, the have a screw cap for sealing the bottle.

I've tried them, they don't work. The marble doesn't hold the ink up top. OOPS, Tasmith does a much better job explaining.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Thanks to both of you. It's been months since I noticed them for the first time and bought those drinks for my kids. They don't get any more because they got so upset that they couldn't keep the marble. Kids...

Hi, it's been a few years, is there an update for this post?

I am the tarot reading, bookworm, whiskey drinking, witchcraft practicing, old fashioned writing, aunt Beasty in my family and I love it. Tarot readings for sale or trade, especially ink as I've lost all of my pen stuff from a bad burglary last year. And I need penpals! Anyone interested, please PM me!

Just checked the Anderson Pens site, because I'm about to make an order from there in the next day or two anyway.

Currently (as of 1/17/21, empty Akkerman bottles are listed as being OOS at the moment.

But given that I think they were possibly also low/out on full bottles, I suspect that ink shipped to retailers (especially from overseas suppliers like Akkerman) might be on a lower priority than, say, face masks or toilet paper (and no -- I'm not really being facetious, since there has been a surge in COVID-19 cases just in the past couple of weeks... :().

You can't even buy the 60ml size from Akkerman themselves at the moment - they say

"Unfortunately, we are forced to take our small 60 ml ink bottles "offline" temporarily. This is caused by delivery failures related to Covid-19. We are of course very sorry, but we hope to be able to offer our inks online again in the foreseeable future. "

They have the 120ml Dutch Masters versions available, but that's a lot of ink if you decide you don't like the colour!

That's what ink samples are for -- to try an ink *before* you spring for a full bottle.

The only 120 ml Akkerman bottle I have is Stormachtig Blauw.  While I like the ink a whole bunch, I won't go through 120 ml bottle anytime soon -- even if it was the only ink I ever used (which, of course, it isn't).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
