Dr. J. has developed a new line of pearlescent inks. I received samples of Cyan Blue with each of the four "shimmer-effects": bronze, copper, gold and silver.

For this "mini-review" of these 4 samples, I have used a dip pen and a Jinhao 450 with 1.1 stub nib. The papers I used included Clairfontaine, Tomoe River and Cambridge spiral bound notebook paper.

 

Overall, the ink flow was excellent. In addition to the lovely shimmery effect, the ink shaded nicely. The ink did need to be agitated frequently to see the full effect of the shimmers. Of the four "shimmer-effects", the most pronounced effect came from the copper sample. I preferred, however, the more subtle effect of the silver shimmers.

I left the ink, undisturbed, in the pen for a couple of days, then began to write. The ink does require agitation to re-suspend the shimmer particles. I also discovered that this ink does have some water resistant properties.

I do like the color of the ink and the silver shimmers compliment the ink very nicely. The ink does stain, however, and took a bit more effort to clean my pen afterward. But, the lovely effect is worth the little extra effort.

 

This ink is made by DeAtramentis, and is worthy of that illustrious name.

If I remember correctlyAmberlea mentioned just the same Staining when she tested the De Atramentis Document inks Cyan

 

Do not know what thits is maxbe it is the Pigment used. I know that some Pigments are difficult for ink for example White Pigments... that is the reason so few White inks are on the market I suppose

 

Sinistral and Amberlea could you please post a pic of a staines test tube or converter... This way I can ask dr J and ask about this

 

One Thing is peculiar... Cyan as part of the CMYK range is used to mix every other colour... Funny that These inks do not stain although they contain Cyan....

I am not sure if this will help, but I noticed in that the sample Cyan Blue with gold-colored particles coated the sample vial and seemed to stain the vial. I noticed the same with the copper but not as much as the gold. The vials with the bronze and silver did not seem to coat or stain the tube at all. Being a bit of a chemist myself (toxicologist), I wonder if the particles are having an electrostatic effect on the pigment, since the particles have different charges (assuming DeA is using metallic particles, but obviously not gold). Either that or the particles are affecting the hydrophobic nature of the plastic vial. To see if it is really "staining" I added a few drops of the cyan blue with gold particles to a plastic pipette, and another with cyan blue with silver particles. I did the same with another ink that I know stains, and another cyan ink that I know does not stain. Finally, I added distilled water to a fifth pipette. I am going to let these dry overnight, then see how much staining there may be left. When I did my cyan tests, I used a cheap converter, which I am sure is made of very inexpensive plastic, which initially stained, but after soaking in water with dishwashing liquid did clean up.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off.
