Kwz Ink - Maroon

Hi,

I have just posted on my blog a short review of KWZ - Maroon, which was reviewed here, but I decided to share a little my pictorial contribution to the topic. So, here it is.

KWZ maroon is a nice and rewarding ink. As most KWZ inks it performs really well. The flow is pretty good and in general I have not found much problems with feathering, bleeding through and all this horrible thing which may happen on the paper. It may do a bit on very cheap and absorbing copy paper, but Rhodia, ClaireFontaine, Midori...these are all fine. Even on more generic but decent quality paper it performs very good.

The colour is deep dark red with hints of magenta/purple and pink hues, which make Maroon very appealing. Is not chestnutty brown as name would suggest, KWZ maroon is definitely reddish. It reminds dark red Bordeaux wine. Is somehow close to popular some time ago Diamine Oxblood, except the purple tones.

Wet looks very juicy and rich. Diluted areas show more red colours, whereas when it dries the purple tones plays larger role. This is visible on writing samples. KWZ Maroon shades a little, however due to its saturation , shading is not that pronounced. Purple and magenta tones are apparent much more on lighter strokes. On ivory toned paper KWZ maroon looks more brown. There is a little bit of sheen, visible on smooth paper.

The only cons which may concern some people is characteristic to KWZ inks smell produced by one of the chemicals used in production, which the best to my knowledge will be replaced in the future and inks would be reformulated. We'll see. Additionally, is not water resistant, which depending what you do with ink may be beneficial.

Otherwise KWZ Maroon is a good ink with solid colour and really good performance.

Here are some wet, semi-dry and dry test samples as well as some writing.

Thank you for this post & the link to your blog. You certainly showed this ink to it's best advantage & it is surely appreciated. I am happy to say I have enjoyed it since I first saw it reviewed here. I just recently saw it on the shelf & thought I needed to have a pen filled with the leaf changes that are underway here.

I've been on the verge of ordering this for the last several days. I've been looking for a really dark red that didn't look brown; the reviews up here give that impression and your photos seem to confirm that is the case. Now to decide which other KWZ to order with it.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

This ink It has a lot of red (especially wet), but is not just a 'dark red ink'. It also has some purple/magenta tones (noticeable in the areas where ink was diluted) which make it quite distinctive. This is very rich and saturated ink and with wet pens/nibs looks fairly dark. But you right, it does not look brown. However, Creamy paper changes the color (or gives impression) of this ink slightly towards brown red. Quite difficult to explain. I would always recommend to get a small sample first before you commit to 60 ml bottle, if you can. Please also compare my rev with the others. It is always good idea to see it from different perspective, captured with different light, paper, camera, etc. Ink reviews are unfortunately subjective and relative, I afraid, sice each of us see colors slightly diffrent

Stunning review. This is my favourite photo of them all. What paper is this strip?

Thank you. I am using 90 lb watercolor paper.

Should've completed the order when I had it in my cart the other day, it's now sold out. :(

Oh no! I might just need to try this one. I don't normally like burgundy inks, but this one looks quite special. And I like that it doesn't lean brown, or blood-red, the way so many of them do. What's the dry time like? And how water resistant is it?

Thanks for the review. And, well, not....

Ruth, in general standard KWZ ink are not water resistant, since they are water based. However, depending on dye (or dyes in it) and how absorbing paper is, some inks my partially stay even after serious wash. Maroon is not water resistant, but a little bit remains...and can be readable...just.

MAroon drying time is not bad I must say. I've just checked with Noodler's Ahab, no pressure, fine line: it takes 5-7 sec to dry on Rhodia Color notepad. With significant pressure to get full flex it takes ca. 17 sec to dry. Full flex on copy paper up to 12 sec tops.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
