... The 355 Mini ...

I recently discovered the benefits of iso B-sized series of papers.

Started with DAISO Notebooks featured here ...

https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/314314-daiso-notebooks-review/?do=findComment&comment=3717401

This is a B5 sized notebook ,

plain , unlined , white writing paper.

Placed on top of an A4 notebook (brown)

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/THE%20355%20MINI%20Journals/1%20GEMATEX%20-%20Butterscotch/DSCF5179_zpsfmxyiasa.jpg

The binding is glued (commonly called 'perfect binding' )

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/THE%20355%20MINI%20Journals/1%20GEMATEX%20-%20Butterscotch/DSCF5182_zpsrrcwfzyz.jpg

I tore them out carefully,

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/THE%20355%20MINI%20Journals/1%20GEMATEX%20-%20Butterscotch/DSCF5193_zpsbj7dv5yj.jpg

The B5 size is useful becos when you halve it, you get a size very close to Field Notes size but less tall.

( Field Notes is about 3.5"wide by 5.5" tall )

Here compared against a Field Notes cahier ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/THE%20355%20MINI%20Journals/1%20GEMATEX%20-%20Butterscotch/DSCF5316_zpslzo76qc9.jpg

Half inch shorter than Field Notes ..

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/THE%20355%20MINI%20Journals/1%20GEMATEX%20-%20Butterscotch/DSCF5317_zpsbyfoush3.jpg

The mini-sized journal will end up exactly 3.5"x 5"

and I have decided to call this series of my journals : "THE 355 MINI " .

After considering what is best in terms of minimal wastage and maximum economy,

I settled on 5 Folios per Signature.

So here , its B5 paper already cut into half.

5 sheets here waiting to be folded over to make one Signature.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/THE%20355%20MINI%20Journals/1%20GEMATEX%20-%20Butterscotch/DSCF5195_zpsmm5k5gt0.jpg

I chose a large radius to punch out the corners.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/THE%20355%20MINI%20Journals/1%20GEMATEX%20-%20Butterscotch/DSCF5197_zpslzueebnh.jpg

In my first attempt, I tried a 7 Signature bookblock as per my usual journals.

Used waxed polyester thread , flat type

I quickly wrapped a pair of covers, using thin grey cards - only 1mm thin.

This journal is meant to be a quickly made type of easy to use journal - as spartan as possible.

No pocket

No ribbon pagemarker.

No elastic band closure even (you can even use ordinary rubberbands if you wish)

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/THE%20355%20MINI%20Journals/1%20GEMATEX%20-%20Butterscotch/DSCF5215_zpsuxiqhkxd.jpg

Exactly 5inches tall

and

3.5 inches wide

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/THE%20355%20MINI%20Journals/1%20GEMATEX%20-%20Butterscotch/DSCF5216_zpsrka9milk.jpg

The journal is covered in bookcloth , Butterscotch .

Here its pictured with the PILOT Elite 95s.

So you can see its a very small journal to carry around.

It can easily fit into your rear pants pocket.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/THE%20355%20MINI%20Journals/1%20GEMATEX%20-%20Butterscotch/DSCF5224_zps6wruhpzy.jpg

This is my new assistant "Kooyar"

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/THE%20355%20MINI%20Journals/1%20GEMATEX%20-%20Butterscotch/DSCF5227_zpsyaucoca0.jpg

With a KAWECO Sport Classic

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/THE%20355%20MINI%20Journals/1%20GEMATEX%20-%20Butterscotch/DSCF5230_zpsq8b2e7ja.jpg

and with a PARKER Duofold Centennial full sized pen...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/THE%20355%20MINI%20Journals/1%20GEMATEX%20-%20Butterscotch/DSCF5228_zpsnf1aod9t.jpg

The thread is causing a bit of a bulk ...

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/THE%20355%20MINI%20Journals/1%20GEMATEX%20-%20Butterscotch/DSCF5247_zpsrslods2m.jpg

I'll try a thinner thread - dental floss ...

I aim to produce a mini-journal that is compact, efficient, small to carry around anywhere.

The paper is fantabulous as reviewed in my post mentioned above...

The achievement is that there is zero wastage in making the bookblock .

So now , if you can find ink-friendly paper, you can produce such types of journals.

This is how good DAISO paper is :

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/THE%20355%20MINI%20Journals/1%20GEMATEX%20-%20Butterscotch/DSCF5233_zpsk72gdydd.jpg

I used a different Signature for the middle Signature.

Its grid paper.

"THE 355 MINI" #2 GEMATEX - Fire Red

This time round , I decided to use dental floss becos its so thin that it doesn't add to the bulk of the bookblock.

http://i1339.photobucket.com/albums/o704/tmleem4/JOURNALS/2016/THE%20355%20MINI%20Journals/2%20GEMATEX%20-%20Fire%20Red/DSCF5280_zpsh5tdvv4u.jpg

The backside of that page ...

Yes if you look at the bottom of the page , there is some bleedthru

But I think this was becos the FP was very wet

It was a GEHA 790 with a very soft flexy nib. So it became a very wet writer.

This bird motif is very commonly used by the Japanese.

Its a plover.

The bird in Japanese is called a Chiya becos of the sound it makes.

And that birdcall resembles the Japanese words - meaning longevity.

Not sure if this would help out any but where the paper is folded have you every tried using a hot clothes iron to flatten the paper out ??

Thanks

I actually did that in my early days of crafting my own journals.

I folded every folio (every sheet) in every signature.

This yielded a very sharp vee edge .

Then I learnt in a separate bookbinding forum that this is not the way to do it.

Cos it made the spine look kinda odd.

The usual technique is to have nicely rounded spines on each signature.

And after crafting so many thus far , I do agree ... 😊

Erm ......

It's in my old Super long thread ...

https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/28367-homemade-journal/page-90?do=findComment&comment=3528410

Some where in there ...

To save you time , let me describe here ...

Grab one entire signature containing all the folios (say 5 , in this case above),

Align it properly,

Fold accurately all together

Press along the spine using a teflon bone folder (it's more expensive but a really worthwhile $investment - I highly recommend it , as do all serious bookbinders )

You now have a nice rounded signature.

I see, thanks. I missunderstood your comment. My concern is the vee shape at the open edge. If I print page numbers at the lower corner I am unable to get them properly aligned once I fold the sheets either individually or all at the same time. I supose the problem does not arise when the signature is formed from a big sheet of paper.

Oh ,

the free edge ,

I think you mean the 'fishtail' effect.

You cant avoid it.

the thicker each sheet of paper, the more pronounced the fishtail effect.

more about the 'fishtail' effect ...

and yes , you are right,

hard to keep the page number at the exact same spot , if you trim away the fishtail.

I suggest you leave it untrimmed, that way its perfectly positioned on each page.

This is THE 355 MINI - #11 Rustic Red

I have a habit of keeping scraps of nice cover material , unless its too small to be of any use.

Here is one example of leftover scrapbooking paper that's not enough to cover A6 but its good to cover this 355 series of my journals.

This way, paper wastage is very minimal.

This is THE 355 MINI #13 "Totoro - Brolly"

As mentioned earlier, origami paper (6"x6" square) fits perfectly for covers that are 3.5"wide x 5"tall, somewhat similar to FieldNote size which is 3.5" x 5.5" , if I am not mistaken.

If for whatever reason you need to adorn your FieldNote book in some distinctive wrap, then origami paper may be an option.

I found this at Kinokuniya.

Its origami paper but bearing the characters of Studio Ghibli.

This one in particular features Totoro, and this pack of prints is titled "Summer".

It is quite costly for a pack of 20sheets bearing only 4 variants.

I couldn't resist the theme - an all too familiar creation by Studio Ghibli, which my children have grown to love. :)

fpn_1509074160__dscf6881.jpg

I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the packet.

The paper is not ordinary paper.

Its Japanese Washi paper ...

fpn_1509072194__dscf6833.jpg

Closeup

Its not plain paper you commonly see.

Japanese washi paper is delicate but strong. They are also excellent in workability , folding, taking wet glue, they don't disintegrate as quickly as common paper does , esp when wet.

fpn_1509072247__dscf6834.jpg

Here you see the origami paper already glued onto the 355 covers.

The leftover paper is a strip which is exactly the size of a bookmark.

fpn_1509072750__dscf6860.jpg

Covers completed

The bookmark strips are then glued back to back, making a proper bookmark.

This is THE 355 MINI "Chuu Totoro"

The other character in the mystical family of Totoro creatures.

From the same pack of origami papers...

Same concept as above...

The ink and watercolour testpage

The foreground in ochre is done by a FP filled with PLATINUM Classic Ink - Citrus Black, an irongall ink that blackens over time.

The paper (and ink) performs admirably , no feathering nor bleedthru on either side of that page.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..
    • A Smug Dill
Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
