De Atramentis Document Inks Test

Here are nine De Atramentis document inks. I have tested the black but on the photograph have included the archive ink as they behave in the same way. The good news is that they are all bleach resistant, as you’d expect. When added to a water base there are some variations. Brown, Fuchsia and Yellow blend very easily revealing some lovely variations in tone while Fog Grey, Dark Blue, Blue, Turquoise and Green are quite resistant. The Black appears to float particles on top of the water, which gives for an interesting texture. As writing inks these are all quite thick – as document inks can be. Of note – the Turquoise bleeds on more absorbent papers! No real surprises here but I doubt I’ll be using any of these in creative projects going forward.

Inks sourced from stationeryshop.scotland@gmail.com and www.gouletpens.com

All tests on Bockingford 200lb watercolour paper using Frankenflex pen Jinhao 159 with titanium zebra G flex nib.

Great test. Completely apart from the colours themselves, I find thier properties quite different from those of other docu inks, e.g. R&K's

To be honest with you, these aren't the best document inks I've tested. If you want some real fun, the Noodler's document inks are just crazy! Here's a link to a few I tested a while ago: https://quinkandbleach.wordpress.com/2015/11/17/noodlers-inks-are-different/

In other tests I've seen of waterproofness and fade resistance, De Atramentis are always on top.

I'm not knocking the quality of De Atramentis inks - they do just what they say on the tin. BUT... I'm investigating fountain pen inks for other more creative purposes. These are okay for line art and then applying ink washes on top but there are other document inks that can do just as good a job with some extra magic - if you get my drift?
