Any P1 Folks Out There?

I have not seen any mention of one of Pelikans more unique pens, the P1 hooded nibbed made from 1958 up through the early '60s. I have three, one Black with a steel "Silvexa" cap, one Grey with a "Silvexa" cap and another Black with a rolled gold cap. They were piston fillers with a tassie on the blind cap which matched the cap metal.

No pics, but I do have a green with the faceted hood & Silvexa cap, medium stub. Not inked up atm though, since it got rotated out of my lineup last month. They are cool little pens, but they don't seem to come up much in discussion.

I dig mine, too, although I have a lot of trouble remembering it's not a slip-cap every single time I take it out of my pocket.

 I wanted to slap myself once or twice when I went to give mine a good tug to remove the cap, then remembered just in time. Was my own fault for keeping it in a pouch with a pair of 51s.

I have a couple of P1s - one black, one burgundy (with green ink portholes), both with rolled gold caps. Love 'em.

I have two, both black P1RGs, love the looks of them, especially the round ink viewing windows. The first of them, bought in a rather sad condition, seems really fussy about the kind of ink I run it on and prone to hard starting -- but that's probably because its whole front section was seriously messed-up when it arrived and I still haven't managed to get it fully fixed. The P1 apparently can suffer flow problems if the feed isn't set at just the right depth in the barrel. The other one is thankfully in excellent condition and doesnt't suffer from any such problems.

I keep my eye out for these as I love the styling but I feel they run a bit over priced on the secondary market. I keep hoping to run across a reasonable example one day as I'd love to give one of these a try. Loving everyones pics. Thanks for sharing!

Aha! That is good to know. I bought a P1 some time ago (part of a job lot that I found pleasantly cheaply). It had horrible flow, even after repeated cleaning. The flow did improve somewhat after I removed, cleaned and replaced the nib and feed, but it's not yet perfect. Now I know I just need to be persistent and play around with the depth of seating.

P1 RG Green Set FP+BP+MP+Case

Lovely pen but a little difficult to clean.

Is that a NOS set in it's original case ? If so, you have a real prize there !!

I am a fan of the P1 too. I love the style of it. I also find it quite easy to clean and deal with because you can "hook" the feed and get everything out using a toothpick.

I have two that I use, one in green and one in grey. One of them has a BB nib and it is lovely and smooth.

The screw on cap and the location of the threads feels very Pelikan, that is carefully engineered.

Actually, I have a third one in burgundy with a barrel that cracked but that I welded/fused. I'd like to sell it but have not got around it.

Great pens, but as someone said, a wee bit overpriced on the secondary market.

David.

I'm excited to have joined the P1 club. Found a Rolled Gold Diamond Black P1 that I couldn't pass up. Appears to be NOS with a fine nib. Waiting on it to arrive from the UK.

  • 2 years later...

I recently got a black P1 with the chrome Silver cap in a medium oblique nib. At first I found the barrel of the pen too narrow but after a short time I adapted very well and I now prefer it to some of my bigger birds. It really is a pleasure to write with.

Had one years ago that has been borrowed indefinitely. Lovely pen, should have kept it. :(

It was black w/ steel cap.

I just got one of these and it arrived today (from Serbia). So I'm reviving this thread to ask: what was the niche of the P1? School pen, starter pen, P51 competitor, or something else? It's so different from other vintage Pelikans that I am familiar with, so I'm curious.

With their gold nibs I think it was likely meant to be a P51 competitor. In this article from Pelikan's Perch Joshua says it was priced higher than Pelikan's 140 or 400 models, so definitely not a school pen. There was, however, a similar looking school cartridge pen, the Pelikano Model 1. Photo of that here.

Thanks for the perspective, and the links. Just what I was hoping for. (I always forget about that website when I have a questions about Pelikans, I suppose because I don't have such questions often.)

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
