Asa Monal - A Custom Beauty

Recently I found myself to be using more pocket pens than bigger pens but I lacked any good custom pocket pen.

So I went to Lakshminarayanan Subramaniam of ASA Pen who suggested me to look into ASA SWAN ,I liked the model

and thought how to spice things up .. I recently acquired only 1.5 rods of the very illusive and sold out

Conway Stewart Flecked Amethyst and thought to make a custom pen based on ASA SWAN out of those blanks ..

The end result

THE ASA MONAL

1. Appearance & Design:- The pen is a rod shaped pen .The body and the section is made from Conway Stewart Flecked Amethyst blank.

The cap is made from black glossy Indian Ebonite and te cap finial is also made from the CS blank. I opted for this custom design

mainly for two reasons . Number one being there wasnt enough CS material available anywhere to make a full size cap and number two

this design shows off the fusion between EAST and WEST ..

The fusion between EAST and WEST

Here the gorgeous CS blank weds the Indian shiny ebonite .. I also made a smaller cap from the CS blank ( still in making process)

2. Construction & Quality : As always ASA made a fantastic job with the CS blank. The finish is world class ,devoid of any tool

marks or imperfection . I cant even feel the joint where the black ebonite meets the Flecked Amethyst finial on the cap .

http://i.imgur.com/LKaYidd.jpg

The cap opens in very convenient

one and half turns . The section is a nice and smooth hourglass transition from the barrel and the threads are perfectly smooth

The smooth barrel to section transition with hourglass section

3.Comparison :- As this pen is based on the model of ASA SWAN a comparison with it only fair.

Both pens are almost equal in length when capped . However the barrel of the ASA MONAL is a little bit thicker and has flat ends .

ASA MONAL AND ASA SWAN CAPPED

Opening the cap of both of pens reveals hourglass section in both , ASA MONAL has slightly thicker section diameter which I enjoy a lot ..

4. Nib & Performance: - IF you ask anyone from India the best Indian nib , I am sure they will come up with KANWRITE ..

The ASA MONAL is custom fitted with KANWRITE #35 M FLEX nib unit ( same unit in noodlers ahab)

The beauty of this nib unit is that not only it writes super smooth out of the box but also you can swap the nib unit with inexpensive

nib units from KANWRITE with the range of EF,F,M,B,BB, RTOBLQ,LFTOBQ ,STUB in regular line and F,M,B in flex lines . This gives an amazing adaptability

of the pen .. EF TO BB just in one quick screw in and out

5. CONCLUSION AND WRITING - The ASA MONAL is an example of true custom beauty ,an wonderful writer and superb craftsmanship of ASA ..

I am very much delighted to possess this beauty ..

Dr. Mukherjee,

Your collaboration with L. Subramaniam created a truly striking pen -- what an inspired combination of black and amethyst! You've chosen an elegant section, and your recommendation makes me want to try a project with these Kanwrite nibs. In addition to showing elements of east and west, the pen also presents a magical, fantastical quality, much like the Mad Hatter in "Alice in Wonderland." If the black cap is the hat, the amethyst is the ribbon. And if your pen sold for 10 shillings and 6 pence, you got a bargain! Wonderful pen, Dr. Mukherjee, and thank you for sharing the project. What does "monal" mean, incidentally?

Thank you BOB. MONAL is a bird found in Himalayas ,as ASA SWAN is named after a bird but swans are not

so much colorful as this pen , I thought I would name it after a more colorful bird .. Here is a picture

Congratulations On a beautiful pen

Convey Stewart Blanks are pretty blanks and a rarity these days.

The pocket pen with a black cap seems a nice touch of fusion too

Wonderful review, good clear detailed pictures. The nib on his pen is wonderful and a great choice in my opinion. Wishing you long lengths of wonderful writing and great memories with the pen. Thank you ASA for another wonderful pen. Would love to see more in the future sir. All the best

Hi Daktarbabu,

Congratulations on designing, commissioning and obtaining a truly unique pen. I like the factthat every part of the pen is unique and customized - the shape, size, materials, nib and even the name.

Its also probably the first custom pen that I am seeing (apart from Azaadi) that combined acrylic and ebonite in one pen.

Dang. You are a great friend!   One comment as a relative newcomer would be within the cleaning section: issues/differences in cleaning vacuum filler, piston filler in addition to cartridge/converter. I just cleaned out my Pilot 823 and while it wasn't particularly difficult I was a little paranoid about the drops of water that I could not get out. Perhaps this is something you are already including.   Anyway, great project and very thoughtful of you. I know it's a project fo

Ah Ruaidhri ya wee heid banger, you do indeed have an Irishman’s way wid dose words now. I’ll be from outer Aberdeenshire up in the blizzard riven braes of the Grampians.  Amateur medicine and surgery is it? Well what noble aspirations you do possess, we need to encourage such noble experimentations.  I pondered on leaving my own battered shell to science, but, until I read your pearls of wisdom and lament, I had comedown on the side of leaving my body to Findus frozen foods.  However, your rema

Hi Smug Dill,   Nice project.  If it were me, I'd cover stuff like: - nib types available, i.e. styles, materials (SS vs gold), flex vs nails; - filling systems (I love the "thingie" comment) and how once can use them in practice (e.g. fill cartridges with a syringe); - pen body materials and their consequences (pen not balanced of too heavy and big for the hand); - and, whilst you've made it clear that you do not like vintage pens, a discussion of these beyond "I d

Thanks for your input! Yes, not putting wood in the list of body materials warranting a mention was an oversight. I love pens with wooden bodies, but my main concern, or chagrin, is that I have not come across a wooden-bodied pen with a wooden cap that seals well. Actually, there is one, but it isn't really wood per se: the Pilot Custom Kaede's maple body is resin impregnated. All other wooden pens I have can dry out while capped and undisturbed; that includes several Platinum #3776 models.

That looks pretty good. You might want to add wood as a material (with its weakness of staining) and mention urushi. And under ergonomic considerations, the size of section (slender pens vs chunky pens), and shape of section, and 'disturbances' such as the Lamy 2000 'ears' and Pilot Capless clip getting in the way might be worth mentioning. Also possibly a general section on things you can do yourself with a bit of care, with a bit of practice, and things that are strictly "don't try this a
