Great review! You make this ink look beautiful. I'm not a fan of purples usually, but in your review there is a complexity and uniqueness about this that makes it attractive.

Never pick a fight with people who buy ink by the barrel.

Sweet Potato Purple is a lovely ink. Well behaved like almost all other Sailor inks.

But to me the sheen looks more green than golden.

Thanks for the lovely review. I again passed on the chance to buy this ink. While it looks lovely, I'm not that much of a fan of sheen, and my most common paper, Mohawk via Linen, is absorbent enough that I never see any sheen there. I like the color though, but there must be something like it in more readily available inks.

I agree that while the color is nice by itself, half of the attraction here is the effect one gets on papers like Tomoe River. If you're sticking with absorbent papers, then I can see why the ink would be a much less compelling proposition.

Is this the ones you use? https://www.thepapermillstore.com/via-linen-pure-white-paper-8-1-2-x-11-in-24-lb-writing-linen-watermarked-500-per-ream.html

Seems heavily textured.

Thanks for the review Gylyf. Bought 2 bottles of this. :)

Since I use TR almost exclusively (sometimes Graphilo), I should get the same results.

I actually use the 70 lb text weight paper in natural, but that's the brand. I dislike bright white papers. Yes it's textured as the finish is "linen". There are other finishes in this line that are smoother, but I like this one. The texture is never a problem for me when writing, but I don't use EF nibs either.

Have a look here. Since I posted the comparisons last year Levenger Pomegranate has been discontinued. Pas you already know, if you don't like sheen avoid the Japanese inks

Well I actually buy inks for the 1) color 2) handling properties. Sheen is unimportant to me. I know for some that is sacrilege. Most most inks that sheen on the papers sheen-lovers use, won't sheen on Mohawk via Linen. About 40% of my ink collection consists of Japanese inks, so I've found no need to avoid them.

Wonder how FPN's own Noodler's Dumas' Tulipe Noire compares on color.

Long time ago I did a comparison with Yamabudo and Grenade/Okuyama... The Sailors were not identical but quite close.

Thanks for the suggestions Cyber6, I was looking at swabs online trying to find some reddish purples. Okuyama caught my eye, and I'll definitely have to check out Yamabudo as well. Looks to me like the Dumas is probably a bit duskier. This will encourage me to add more purples to my pile.

Do you think there are any KZW or Oster inks that come close?

I would also say that Oku-Yama is quite close. SPP is slightly more purple though, but it's not much.

I have a bottle of SPP in the vase shaped bottle, but I can understand people not wanting to pay the current price to have it in the regular, poorly designed, Sailor bottle. -_-

I have relegated (more like upgraded) inks which come in these jar bottles to use in my eyedropper pen only.

Extremely horrible experience to fill from those jar bottle, especially in the presence of that plastic contraption which is supposed to aid filling.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
